Betting on the Detroit Tigers (47-57)
After back-to-back wins – one wherein they pummeled the American League-leading Houston Astros, 13-1 – the Tigers are now back in the losing column. They fell to the Yankees in the series-opener Monday night, 7-2, for their eighth loss in 12 games.
No new expectations can be made on offense, as two of the usual suspects – Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton – are remaining as the most effective hitters in the past week. The two combine for 14 hits, six runs, nine RBIs, and a pair of homers in that span (.297 batting average). Look for those veterans to continue being the most reliable guys on offense.
Whether it’s Cabrera, Upton, or whoever, though, the production must be as solid as it can, because tomorrow’s starter, Anibal Sanchez, cannot be expected to do much damage. The Yankees are only batting a .225 against Sanchez all-time, but the 11-year veteran is having the worst year of his career (2-1, 6.98 ERA). In his most recent start (July 26th), he allowed four runs on nine hits in just 3.2 innings.
Betting on the New York Yankees (57-47)
Monday’s cruising win was big for the Yankees. It had them officially reclaiming the top spot in the AL East, and since it was also their seventh win in eight games, confidence is again at a high.
Plenty of guys on the team are contributing well in the great stretch, with the most notable being these two veterans: Brett Gardner, who’s on a 12-game hitting streak, and Chase Headley, who has a pair of three-hit games in the last five days. Aaron Judge isn’t as potent as he was early in the season and he’s only 3-for-19 in the last seven days, but it’s good that he has two dingers in his last four outings.
As for the starting pitcher duties, it will be CC Sabathia’s (9-3, 3.66 ERA) turn again. The veteran lefty should continue generating excitement from fans, as the Yankees have won in eight of his last nine starts and the Tigers are only hitting at .242 against him all-time (36-for-149).
Writer’s Prediction
