Record: 19-4 Overall/9-3 Conference
Just when Duke was looking unstoppable after beating the North Carolina Tar Heels in Chapel Hill last Saturday, the Blue Devils betrayed the majority of expectations of their chances to continue winning when they got tripped up at home Monday, losing to Tony Bennet’s Virginia Cavaliers to the tune of a 69-68 score. The Blue Devils shot just 42.3 percent from the field and turned the ball over a total of 15 times — 10 more than Virginia’s. Those miscues hurt Duke a lot, though, Virginia defense could really have that kind of impact against any team in the nation. Things could get better for Paolo Banchero and company this Thursday against Clemson, whom they had already defeated this season. Duke beat the Tigers at home back on Jan., 25, 71-69. Banchero, who scored just nine points versus Virginia, produced 19 points in the win over Clemson. Duke went 11/13 from the free-throw line in that game, as the Tigers struggled to contain the Blue Devils’ attack, while Clemson only shot just once from the foul line.
Duke is 3-1 against the spread in its last four games overall.
Betting on the Clemson Tigers (+7)
Record: 12-11 Overall/4-8 Conference
Clemson has now lost back-to-back games — again. After losing to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on the road last Saturday, 69-64, they fell prey to the North Carolina Tar Heels at home on Tuesday, 79-77. Although Clemson is only 1-3 straight up in its last four games, the Tigers did not look too outclassed in the losses during that stretch, which includes the first meeting with Duke. Against the Blue Devils, Clemson managed to easily cover the spread as double-digit road underdogs in Durham. The Tigers did not make Duke feel comfortable in that game. They even entered halftime tied with the Blue Devils, with PJ Hall, Hunter Tyson, and Chase Hunter each finished the game with at least 12 points. Clemson’s outside shooting was what kept it afloat, as the Tigers went 11/26 from deep versus Duke. The Tigers shot 42.1 percent (8/19) from behind the arc against North Carolina, so expect them to check early in the Duke rematch if they could get hot from long range early.
Clemson, 14th in the nation with a 38.2 3-point shooting percentage, is 7-2-1 against the spread in its last 10 games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Duke wins, 76-70.
