Betting on the Duke Blue Devils (odds)
Record: 23-4 Overall/13-3 Conference
The Blue Devils are inching closer and closer to winning the regular-season title in the ACC in head coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final year at Duke. The Blue Devils collected their 13th win in conference play last Saturday by easily beating the Florida State Seminoles at home, 88-70. Paolo Banchero came through with 17 points and eight rebounds against the Noles, but it was Wendell Moore who had the biggest impact, as he had 16 points to go with seven assists and six steals. Banchero and Moore are the two biggest Duke threats to the Orange, but Syracuse might also be warier of AJ Griffin, who sank five of the Blue Devils’ 14 threes in a 79-59 home win over Syracuse last January. Duke’s offense and defense are clicking in the ACC, even topping both the adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency in conference play, per KenPom. It will be tough for Syracuse to hang with the Blue Devils, especially defensively, as the Orange have a mediocre defense that earlier this season gave up 100 points to Colgate.
Duke, which is facing the Virginia Cavaliers this Wednesday in Charlottesville, is 4-1 agains the spread in the last five meetings with the Orange.
Betting on the Syracuse Orange (odds)
Record: 15-12 Overall/9-7 Conference
Syracuse has done a good job since late January. The Orange have gone 6-1 straight up in seven games after their road loss to the Pittsburgh Panthers on Jan. 25. In their most recent outing, the Orange defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets by the slimmest of margins via overtime, 74-73, for their ninth win in conference play. Syracuse’s strength lies in its offense that is currently ranked fourth in the AC with 109.5 points per 100 possessions. Syracuse is also a tall team (fifth nationally in average height), and that helps them recover misses. In fact, the Orange are second in the ACC with a 30.8 offensive rebound percentage. They had 14 offensive rebounds in the loss to Duke while the Blue Devils only had 11. The Orange are also hoping their outside shooting clicks in this game. They are 12th in the nation with a 38.2 3-point shooting percentage but went just 5/29 in the first meeting with the Blue Devils.
Syracuse, which plays the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend this Wedneday, is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 games as the home team.
Writer’s Prediction
Duke wins, 81-70.
