Betting on the Golden State Warriors (71-9)
The Splash Brothers had an off night from beyond the arc last night when Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson combined to go 5 for 24 from downtown. Luckily, they had Draymond Green to the rescue. Green scored 23 points, seven in the closing 3:32, to lead Golden State to a 100-99 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies.
Green could have a prominent role in this matchup against the Spurs, especially if the Warriors play small. He’ll be a good stretch forward, shooting 50 percent against San Antonio this season. He barely missed out on a triple double in his last outing at San Antonio, needing just one rebound and two more assists.Curry is worth looking out for in any game, but even more so in this one. He stunk from three-point range in his last showing at AT&T Center, going just 1 for 12. While he was also off yesterday (3 for 14), expect him to make the necessary adjustments to go off for another big outing.
The reigning MVP will need to be at the top of his game especially if Thompson once again struggles against the Spurs. Thompson has made just 20 percent of his shots from downtown in three games against the Spurs this season.
The Warriors have won eight of their last 10 on the road, but have gone just 4-5-1 against the spread.
Betting on the San Antonio Spurs (65-14)
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich maintains that going unbeaten at home means nothing for him as the playoffs approach. While that statement certainly holds true, he may need to get his team very motivated to win this game against the Warriors. The Spurs will need every sort of mental advantage against the league’s best, especially at home.
The Spurs have the mental edge of owning 33 consecutive regular season home victories against Golden State. It’s the second longest streak in NBA history behind the Lakers’ 43-game dominance over the Kings. San Antonio will need all hands on deck if they are to beat the Warriors again tonight.
It all starts with Kawhi Leonard, who leads the team with 21.1 points per game. He’s been pretty good in the regular season series against the Warriors, averaging 19 points on 53.1 percent shooting (including 57 percent from three). He’ll get plenty of help from LaMarcus Aldridge, who finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds in the first meeting at San Antonio.
While offense is certainly important, the Spurs will need to pay more attention on defense. They had plenty of success against the Warriors in the first game at San Antonio due to their defense. They limited Golden State to a season-low 79 points on 37.8 percent shooting. It’s going to be interesting if the Spurs can force the league’s best to another bad offensive showing.
Despite their dominant home run this regular season, the Spurs are just 3-7 ATS in their last 10 in AT&T Center.
