Betting on the Green Bay Packers (-4.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
So long as Aaron Rodgers is under center for the Packers, they will always have a shot at winning any game. Rodgers returns for possibly his last season in Green Bay, and he’ll still have an incredible supporting cast on offense. Aaron Jones remains one of the best running backs in the NFL. Davante Adams is arguable the baddest wide receiver in the league. Last season, Jones rushed for 1,104 yards and nine touchdowns. Adams, on the other hand, recorded 1,374 receiving yards and 18 touchdown catches in just 14 games. No wonder Green Bay was the top-scoring team in the NFL in 2020, with an average of 31.5 points per game. This is an offense that can shatter any kind of defense. As for their own defense, Green Bay shored up their secondary by selecting Georgia cornerback Eric Stokes. Don’t get surprised if Stokes makes quite an impression right away with error-prone Jameis Winston slinging the ball for the Saints.
The Packers are 7-1 against the spread in their last eight games in Week 1 of the regular season. The over is 4-0 in Green Bay’s last four games overall.
Betting on the New Orleans Saints (+4.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
As mentioned, it’s going to be Jameis Winston who’s been entrusted by Sean Payton to drive the offense on the field. Winston inherits the gig long held by the now-retired Drew Brees, so the pressure will always be high. Last season, the Saints were fifth in the NFL with 29.1 points per game and 12th with 372.3 total yards per contest. New Orleans could also test Green Bay’s defense that was slightly porous on third downs. The Packers allowed opponents to convert over 40 percent of attempts on third downs in 2020. Winston aside, the Saints will surely be feeding running back Alvin Kamara with the ball a lot. Kamara is bound to get a heavier workload now that Brees is gone and Michael Thomas still unable to play because of recent surgery.
The Saints are 7-2 against the spread in their last nine games against teams in the NFC. The under is 4-1 in New Orleans’ last five September games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Packers win, 29-20.
