Betting on the Green Bay Packers (-2.5)
Regular Season Record: 5-2
The Packers suffered their second loss in three games, as they fell prey to the Minnesota Vikings at home last Sunday, 28-22. Green Bay simply had no answer defensively to Vikings running back Dalvin Cook, who tore them apart for 163 rushing yards, 63 receiving yards, and four total touchdowns. Green Bay simply couldn’t stop Minnesota’s run game, and that part of their defense is something the Packers have to address in just three days before facing San Francisco. The good thing for the Packers is that they have Aaron Rodgers, who passed for 291 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-41 completions, who can replicate what Russell Wilson did to the 49ers’ defense last Sunday. Wilson tossed four touchdowns with zero interceptions against the 49ers, who didn’t even have to contend with the Seattle Seahawks’ normal backfield depth. The Packers, meanwhile, could be ready to roll out running back Aaron Jones, who missed the Vikings game due to a calf injury. If he can’t go again, Green Bay will lean on Jamaal Williams for the bulk of their rushing chores. Williams rushed for 75 of the Packers’ 109 yards on the ground on 16 carries against Minnesota.
The Packers, who are averaging 32.8 points, are 6-4 against the spread in their last 10 games overall.
Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (+2.5)
Regular Season Record: 4-4
Once again, the 49ers fell short of completing a three-game win streak, as they absorbed a 37-27 road loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8, which followed back-to-back wins over the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots. The 49ers have plenty of health issues, with a number of key players sidelined, including Raheem Mostert, Nick Bosa, and Kwon Alexander, but they will have to continue battling without them when they face the Packers, the same team they beat in the NFC Championship Game last season. And how they defeated Green Bay in that game likely holds the key to how to do it again this time around. The Packers’ run defense was bad in Week 8, as it got straight-up detonated by Dalvin Cook, as mentioned earlier, so San Francisco might have to let their ground game do the heavy lifting again. In the NFC game, the 49ers rushed for 285 yards and four touchdowns, though they had Mostert then. Tevin Coleman left the Seattle game with a knee injury and his status remains unclear for Week 9, but the 49ers still have JaMycal Hasty and Jerick McKinnon. San Francisco might also start Nick Mullens after Jimmy Garoppolo failed to finish Sunday’s contest after he was seen limping on the sidelines.
The under is 3-1 in the 49ers’ last four home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Packers win, 28-26.
