The Jacksonville Jaguars surprised fans and experts alike last season by reaching the AFC Championship Game where they lost to the New England Patriots. The New York Giants, on the other hand, struggled mightily in 2017 and finished well below what’s expected of them. This coming Sunday, these two teams with different endings to their 2017 campaigns will meet on the field for their respective season openers.

Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (-3 Point Spread)
Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey has spent plenty of time in the offseason talking trash to many of his fellow NFL stars. In Week 1, it’s time for him to back his words up. Ramsey, however, is one of the few players in the league with the talent to match their rhetoric, as he is among the best cornerbacks in the league today. With Ramsey defining Jacksonville’s identity in the secondary, the Jags were able to limit opponents to only 17.7 points and only 190.1 passing yards per game in 2017 – the same year Jacksonville finished second in the NFL with 55.0 sacks.
Jacksonville’s attack will continue to rely heavily on the arm of quarterback Blake Bortles, though, he is one key weapon down after wide receiver Marqise Lee, expected to be the Jags’ No. 1 option downfield, suffered a knee injury during the preseason that landed him on the injured reserve list.
In the backfield, Leo Fournette will provide a solid source of yards on the ground. Fournette led the league’s top rushing unit last year with 1,040 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
Jacksonville is 5-3 ATS in its last eight road games.
Betting on the New York Giants (+3 Point Spread)
The Giants finished with just a 3-13 record last year, but there are plenty of reasons for the team’s fans to get excited heading into the 2018 NFL season. For one, wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is back in action after getting sidelined for most of the 2017 campaign with a broken ankle that needed a season-ending surgery to repair. Apart from Beckham, the Giants are also brandishing a shiny new running back in the form of Saquon Barkley, who should be able to re-invigorate New York’s backfield that generated just 96.8 rushing yards per game (26th in the NFL). The combination of Beckham and Barkley should be able to ease the load off the shoulders of an aging but still effective quarterback Eli Manning.
The Giants’ defense had talent last season, but off-the-field issues and perhaps lack of desire to compete slid the team down to 27th in scoring defense and 31st in total defense. An entire offseason to get it together plus the addition of linebacker Alec Ogletree should have the Giants’ defense on the upswing again.
The Giants are 3-1 ATS in their last four home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Jacksonville wins, 26-23.
