Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (-4.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Chiefs lost a key weapon on offense over the offseason, as they traded wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins. That being said, Kansas City will remain dangerous on offense. This team still has Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes, who passed for 4,839 yards and 37 touchdowns against 13 interceptions in 2021, will anchor the attack of Kansas City that averaged nearly 30 points a game last season. Travis Kelce remains one of the best downfield targets in the game and should benefit from the absence of Hill in terms of opportunities. Plus Mahomes got two new weapons in the forms of Marquez Valdes-Scantling and JuJu Smith-Schuster. Spending their first two picks in the 2022 NFL Draft on cornerback Trent McDuffie and defensive end George Karlaftis also means that Kansas City’s defense has fresh talents to complement the Chiefs’ offense.
The Chiefs are 4-1 against the spread in their last 5 games in Week 1.
Betting on the Arizona Cardinals (+4.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
Last season, the Cardinals started the season on a seven-game undefeated streak but went just 4-6 the rest of the way, not including their loss in the wild-card round to the Los Angeles Rams. Nevertheless, the Cardinals have the firepower to terrify opposing defenses and keep up with the best offenses in the league. Kyler Murray passed for 3,787 yards with 24 touchdowns (10 interceptions) in 2021, while James Conner rushed for 752 yards and 15 touchdowns. They lost Chase Edmond and Christian Kirk over the offseason but those left behind should still be enough to keep opposing defenses honest.
The Cardinals are 6-1 against the spread in their last 7 games as an underdog.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cardinals win, 27-24.
