Betting on the Kansas City Chiefs (+3)
Defense wins games. That’s basically how Kansas City found itself triumphant in Sunday’s showdown with the Jaguars despite playing with a shorthanded lineup offensively.
Alex Smith and Spencer Ware were both out with injuries; Jeremy Maclin hurt his groin in the opening period and did not return, while Travis Kelce got himself ejected in fourth quarter after complaining about a no-call on a pass interference.
The Chiefs overcame the odds, as they kept Blake Bortles in check for almost the entire game and pulled out the necessary stops down the stretch to snatch the win. Nick Foles, who got the nod as the starting QB, passed for 187 yards with a touchdown and was able to set up Cairo Santos for four field goals, which made up most of their points.
With Smith coming back this weekend, the Chiefs’ offense should revert back to being normal again. But he could be in for a rude return against a very pesky Carolina pass rush that had four sacks on Case Keenum during a hard-fought win over the Rams.
Kansas City is 4-1 SU and 2-3 ATS in its last five games.
Betting on the Carolina Panthers (-3)
Cam Newton was sacked five times, but Carolina still clawed its way to victory, 13-10, in a defensive showdown with the Rams on Sunday.
The Panthers D held Los Angeles scoreless until Greg Zuerlin kicked in a 25-year-old field goal with 8:01 remaining in regulation. Newton, the reigning league MVP, has not looked like his dominant self at all, but persevered his way to complete 20 of his 32 passes for 225 yards together with a first-quarter touchdown pass to Greg Olsen.
The offense of Carolina, however, generated just 244 yards against LA’s own defense. Still, you have to give a ton of credit to Newton and co. for grinding this one out. They’ve now won back-to-back games after starting 1-5, putting them in the thick of things in the Wild Card race.
The O-line’s got to do a better job in protecting Newton, though. He’s been sacked a staggering 17 times in his previous five games, and the Panthers upcoming encounter with the visiting Chiefs may not go well for them if their superstar QB continues getting pummeled inside the pocket.
Carolina is 3-2 SU and ATS in its last five home games.
