The Chiefs are ready to get back to work after falling short of their goals to become back-to-back Super Bowl champions, thanks to their loss in Super Bowl 55 to Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But make no mistake about it. This is a team that is loaded and a serious contender for the Vince Lombardi Trophy this coming season. Patrick Mahomes might not play much in this game, but it will be worth checking out how ready he is for the 2021 NFL regular season based on the few drives he’ll have against the Niners. Still on offense, the Chiefs would love to see their offensive line hold up well in this game. Mahomes got bullied in Super Bowl 55 by Tampa Bay’s pass rush, so fixing his pass protection was a point of emphasis by the Chiefs this offseason.
The Chiefs, who averaged 28.5 points per game in 2020, are 5-4-1 against the spread in their last 10 road games in the preseason.
Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (-2.5)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
Consider this game as the Trey Lance showcase special. The 49ers need to find out more about Lance’s capability, and a tuneup against the defending AFC champions, notwithstanding the fact that this is only the preseason, can help determine whether the rookie could actually leap in front of Jimmy Garrpolo in the quarterback pecking order in San Francisco. The 49ers are also looking forward to seeing who among the depth guys in the receiving corps will shine. Richie James, River Cracraft, and Trent Sherfield among others can use this game to turn the heads of the Niners’ coaching staff. While the likes of Nick Bosa and Dee Ford won’t be seeing action in Week 1 of the preseason, the Niners will test offseason acquisitions Maurice Hurst, Arden Key, and Zach Kerr on their offensive line.
The 49ers are 3-1 against the spread in their last four preseason games. The total has also hit the under three times in those contests.
Writer’s Prediction
The 49ers win, 17-16.
