Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (62-59)
The Angels are still a couple of games back from the current number one wildcard team in the American League, New York Yankees, but they are definitely coming in hard for the spot. They will enter tomorrow’s contest as winners in six of their last seven.
One of the good, under-the-radar stories in baseball this year, Andrew Heaney, is getting the nod to start. The fourth-year pro was expected to miss the entire season due to his Tommy John surgery in July of 2016, but because he was able to recover way ahead of time, he’s inspiringly back in the fold. Heaney is 6-5 with a 3.63 ERA in 19 career starts with the Angels.
Over on offense, Albert Pujols and CJ Cron are the two guys to watch out for. Both are 6-for-21 in the past week, with the former also having four RBIs and the latter having two home runs and three RBIs.
Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (59-62)
The Orioles have dropped six of their last nine, but they are once again on a hot-and-cold stretch for the nth time this season. They have now followed up a 10-plus-run performance with a loss on consecutive occasions, both of which had them scoring three runs or less.
There is, however, no doubt as to which Oriole is currently on a hot streak batting-wise – it’s newly-acquired Tim Beckham and it’s not even close. Manny Machado is hitting at .344 and has two homers and nine RBIs in the past week, which is really nice, but Beckham’s numbers since arriving in Baltimore is almost unprecedented. The former Tampa Bay Ray is 32-for-66 with five homers and 12 RBIs in 16 games with the team, and has an impressive slash line of .485/.507/.879 in that span.
Accompanying those guys on defense, however, is someone that can cancel out Beckham and Machado’s potential good outing. Projected starter Jeremy Hellickson is only 7-7 with a 4.70 ERA this season, and the Orioles have lost in nine of his 11 previous starts. In his start against the Angels last August 8th, although he struck out nine, he earned a loss after allowing three runs on six hits and one walk across six innings.
Writer’s Prediction
The Angels (+128) win it, 6-4.
