Miami is still waiting for Tua Tagovailoa to hit the potential he projected before the Dolphins took him high in the 2020 NFL Draft. But for this game against the Bucs, it’s the backups who are the focus, so Teddy Bridgewater and rookie quarterback Skylar Thompson should get the heavier workloads. Thompson is an intriguing player because of his Taysom Hill-esque qualities, and in this glorified exhibition game on Saturday, the Dolphins might be tempted to be a bit more creative with him. Miami won the Tyreek Hill sweepstakes, and we may see him in a few snaps against the Bucs, too. With an improved offensive line and Hill downfield, the Dolphins’ offense can be a bit bolder this time around.
The Dolphins are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games on a Saturday.
Betting on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+1)
Regular Season Record: 0-0
The Bucs are loaded once again in 2022. Tom Brady is back and the team also signed future Hall of Famer wide receiver Julio Jones in the offseason. But Tampa Bay is also not foolish enough to let those two elder statesmen in the league play significant snaps – if at all they do – in the preseason. Instead, look for the Bucs to let second-year pro Kyle Trask get plenty of exposure in the game, with Tampa Bay still interested to see what it really has in him. Rookie running back Rachaad White, drafted in the third round, will also get some carries here, as he aims to further lock up his position as the main backup behind Leonard Fournette. Last season, the Buccaneers were second in the NFL with 29.9 points per game and seventh in scoring defense with just 20.9 points allowed per contest.
The Buccaneers are 11-3 against the spread in their last 14 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Dolphins win, 17-16.
