Betting on the Miami Hurricanes (-3.5)
It’s been a walk in the park for Miami thus far this season, as the Hurricanes blew by their first two opponents, dismantling Florida A&M in the opener, 70-3, before a 38-10 massacre of the Florida Atlantic Owls. Another underdog team is standing in Miami’s this Saturday, as the Canes go up against Appalachian State.Defense has been the highlight for Miami early this season, giving up just 205.5 yards per game. The size sample is small and the previous opponents obviously too weak to make much about Miami’s defense, but expect it to still make a difference. Linebacker Michael Pinckney has been one of the defense’s top performers, having collected 12 tackles. As a team, the Hurricanes lead all FBS teams in sacks (10) and tackles (28)
Scoring hasn’t been a problem for the Hurricanes, as they have outscored their opponents 108-13. That said, quarterback Brad Kaaya left much to be desired following an underwhelming showing against Florida Atlantic in which he passed for only 191 yards without a touchdown and with two interceptions on 17 of 31 completions. In any case, the Hurricanes have a strong running game to fall back on. They are second in the ACC with 326.0 rushing yards per game.
Miami is 6-4 ATS in its last 10 games where it was the favorite by four points or fewer.
Betting on the Appalachian State Mountaineers (+3.5)
The Mountaineers won’t get rattled facing an FCS team like Miami. After all, they nearly embarrassed Tennessee on national TV with a close 20-13 overtime loss back in September 1. Appalachian State vented all its frustrations from that loss in the next game, battering Old Dominion in a 31-7 victory last Saturday.
Like the Canes, Appalachian State has been relying on its stalwart defense to stymie opponents. Tennessee definitely felt that, particularly on the ground, as the Vols were only able to pound out 127 rushing yards on 43 carries.
As for their offense, the Mountaineers might want to pass the ball more this time around to keep Miami’s defense honest and leave enough room for running back Marcus Cox to navigate. Cox is the team’s leading rusher with 248 on the season.
