Betting on the Miami Hurricanes (13-4)
No. 25 Miami’s defense will be put on an acid test again this Sunday, when the Hurricanes take on the high-flying offense of the Wolfpack. Just this Monday, Miami had to deal with No. 5 Duke’s army of scorers with the Hurricanes faring well until the Blue Devils turned on their boosters in the second half and erased a 13-point lead to hand Jim Larranaga and his boys an 83-75 loss. Nevertheless, Miami remains as one of the top defensive teams with only 62.0 points allowed per game – sixth in Division I ball. Although Duke won, the Blue Devils had 19 turnovers against Miami, so NC State know that it’s not going to be that easy for them on offense. Miami, which is 3-1 SU and 2-1-1 ATS in its last four meetings with the Wolfpack, averages 73.2 points per game and shoots 47.0 percent from the field so far this season.
Betting on the NC State Wolfpack (12-6)
The Wolfpack are battle-tested this season, having recently faced three-straight ranked opponents in No. 2 Duke, No. 19 Clemson, and No. 3 Virginia, which was one of the most brutal – if not the most brutal – stretches any team has had so far this season. What’s amazing though is that the Wolfpack beat Duke and Clemson before falling to Virginia. Of those games, the loss to the Cavaliers seem to the best preview for the Wolfpack’s showdown with against Miami. Like Virginia, the Hurricanes are a defensive menace on the court. In any case, the Wolfpack will resort to their offense. They are averaging 81.3 points per game. NC State also likes to bully opponents for offensive rebounds, as the Wolfpack are garnering 34.3 percent of offensive boards in a game, which is 17th in the nation. That spells trouble for the Hurricanes, who could tire out while trying to defend NC State’s multiple offensive sets off of offensive rebounds.
NC State is 6-3 SU in its last nine home games against Miami.
Writer’s Prediction:
NC State wins, 74-71.
