Betting on the Miami Marlins (45-52)
The ever unpredictable Marlins are continuing their erratic ways. After failing to sweep the lowly Cincinnati Reds on Sunday, they suddenly shutout the streaking Rangers on the road, 4-0. They are now winners in three of their last four following a stretch that saw them drop five of six games.
That unpredictability, however, isn’t present batting-wise. The usual guys – Giancarlo Stanton, Dee Gordon, and Justin Bour – are the team’s best performers in the past week, with Stanton, who’s the subject of trade rumors, tallying four home runs, six RBIs, and five runs in that time span. Gordon and Bour aren’t as potent on homers, but the two combine to have an efficient .306 batting average.
Dan Straily will be the team’s projected starting pitcher for Tuesday. The fifth-year veteran is a decent 7-5 with a 3.49 ERA in 20 games this season, but the Marlins have lost in his last two appearances after helping them win in all of his five prior starts.
The Rangers’ current roster is 23-for-115 (.200) all-time when facing Straily.
Betting on the Texas Rangers (48-51)
Sunday’s disappointing performance came out of nowhere. The Rangers entered with the confidence of winning three in a row – all of which were on the road – but they are suddenly unable to score at their home turf.
The good news, though, is that it’s unlikely they get shutout at Arlington on back-to-back nights. Also, despite only batting .217 in the last seven days, they usually smash dingers whenever they hit, as they have 10 in the said time frame – two each from Shin Soo-Choo, Elvis Andrus, Rougned Odor, and Joey Gallo, and one from Mike Napoli and Carlos Gomez.
Accompanying those guys on defense will be Cole Hamels, who’s 4-1 with a 3.78 ERA in 10 starts this season. He should be eyeing redemption for his horrible outing last July 20th, where he gave up seven runs on nine hits and two walks, while only striking out three.
The Rangers are 5-2 in Hamels’s last seven starts, but the Marlins’ current roster is hitting a respectable .284 against him all-time (57-for-201, with nine homers and 25 RBIs).
Writer’s Prediction
The Rangers (-150) take a win back, 5-4.
