Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees (7:00 PM ET)
Line: Boston Red Sox (+135) at New York Yankees (-150); total: 9.0 – see all MLB lines
[sc:MLB240banner ]In need of wins to keep their hopes of a postseason spot alive, the Yankees must be happy to know that Boston will start Brandon Workman (1-8, 4.93 ERA) tonight. The Red Sox, who lost 5-1 to New York yesterday, is 0-8 in Workman’s last eight starts, which includes their 6-0 loss to the Bronx Bombers on June 27. The Red Sox take on Yankees’ starter Chris Capuano (2-3, 4.24 ERA), whom they beat in the last two times they’ve faced him.
Writer’s prediction: New York wins.
Cincinnati Reds vs. Baltimore Orioles (7:05 PM ET)
Line: Cincinnati Reds (+135) at Baltimore Orioles (-150); total: 8.0 – see all MLB lines
The Reds continue to fire blanks on offense, and last night’s 6-0 loss to Baltimore was nothing but another example of the team’s futility at the plate. Cincinnati has averaged a meager 2.0 runs per game over its last five games, four of which have gone under the total. It’s a complete opposite for the Orioles, who have scored 11 runs in the first two games of the series. The over is 3-1 in Baltimore’s last four games.
Writer’s prediction: Baltimore wins.

Toronto Blue Jays vs. Tampa Bay Rays (7:10 PM ET)
Line: Toronto Blue Jays (+120) at Tampa Bay Rays (-130); total: 7.5 – see all MLB lines
Still plugging away are the Blue Jays, who have racked up four-straight wins after dealing Tampa Bay a 7-4 loss last night. Mark Buehrle steps on the mound for Toronto later, looking to improve the team’s 4-0 record in his last four starts against the Rays. Tampa Bay, however, is 4-1 in the last five times it faced a lefty starter. Furthermore, the Rays are 4-1 in Jake Odorizzi’s (10-11, 4.03 ERA) last three starts in a third game of a series.
Writer’s prediction: Tampa Bay wins.
Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Indians (7:05 PM ET)
Line: Detroit Tigers (-135) at Cleveland Indians (+125); total: 7.5 – see all MLB lines
Max Scherzer (15-5, 3.26 ERA) had an uncharacteristically bad performance in his last start, allowing five earned runs in 6.2 innings of work in the Tigers’ 3-6 loss to the Chicago White Sox last August 30th. A start at Progressive field could just be what the doctor ordered for the reigning American League Cy Young winner, as the Tigers are 4-1 in Scherzer’s last five starts there. The Indians, who are making a push for at least a wild card ticket in the AL, will counter Scherzer with Trevor Bauer (5-7, 3.99 ERA). They are 4-0 in his last four starts overall.
Writer’s prediction: Cleveland wins.
St. Louis Cardinals vs. Milwaukee Brewers (8:10 PM ET)
Line: St. Louis Cardinals (-102) at Milwaukee Brewers (-108); total: 8.0 – see all MLB lines
It’s a tale of two streaks when the Cardinals take on Milwaukee in the opener of their crucial four-game series. The Cards are 5-0 in their last five games, and are 7-3 in their last 10 games against Milwaukee. The Brewers, on the other hand, are reeling, having lost eight-straight games. The team will look to arrest their skid, as they start Willy Peralta (15-9, 3.82 ERA). The Brewers are 4-1 in their last five starts of Peralta.
Writer’s prediction: St. Louis wins.
