Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns
Where: Cotton Bowl, Dallas
When: Saturday, October 10, 12:00 PM ET
Line: Oklahoma Sooners (-17) vs. Texas Longhorns (+17) – view all NCAA Football lines
TV Broadcast: ABC
The Red River Rivalry has lost its spark over the last few years with the slow and steady decline of the once-great Texas program. But rivalries are always fun whatever the context, which makes Oklahoma vs. Texas at the Cotton Bowl a definite must-watch.
[sc:NCAA240banner ]After consecutive special teams-induced heartbreakers against Cal and Oklahoma State, Texas was absolutely mauled by TCU, 50-7, last week. With his job possibly on the line if he suffers another humiliation, Charlie Strong should have his Texas team going extra hard in this one against the rival Sooners.
Despite being huge 17-point underdogs, don’t discount the Longhorns from pulling off a possible upset over the No. 10 Sonners. In the last 20 years there have been six double-digit underdogs in the Red River Showdown, and four times those underdogs have covered. Two even won outright, including two years ago when Texas defeated Oklahoma 36-20 as a 13.5-point underdog.
Writer’s Prediction: Oklahoma escapes with a 34-27 win, but Texas (+17) covers.
LSU Tigers vs. South Carolina Gamecocks
Where: Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia
When: Saturday, October 10, 12:00 PM ET
Line: LSU Tigers (-13.5) at South Carolina Gamecocks (+13.5) – view all NCAA Football lines
TV Broadcast: ESPN
At this point, any game featuring Leonard Fournette is now appointment viewing, regardless of the opponent. As he’s proven through the first four weeks of the season, he’s bound to do something amazing in every game he plays. The Heisman front-runner’s next assignment this coming weekend is a matchup with struggling South Carolina.
While Georgia vs. Tennessee is the more competitive matchup in the SEC this weekend, the prospect of watching Fournette go for a record-extending fourth-straight 200-plus-yard rushing game (which, judging by the Gamecocks’ defense, is a very distinct possibility) brings the watchability quotient of LSU-SC way up.
Writer’s Prediction: Fournette rushes for 200 more yards in a 31-13 LSU win.
Northwestern Wildcats vs. Michigan Wolverines
Where: Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor
When: Saturday, October 10, 3:30 PM ET
Line: Northwestern Wildcats (+8) at Michigan Wolverines (-8) – view all NCAA Football lines
TV Broadcast: Big Ten Network
There are only two matchups this weekend featuring two ranked opponents, and the Big Ten showdown featuring No. 13 Northwestern vs. No. 18 Michigan is one of them.
Jim Harbaugh’s Wolverines are absolutely rolling at the moment, as they’re coming off back-to-back shutout wins over then-No. 22 BYU and Maryland. The 5-0 Wildcats have two shutouts of their own this season, though, including their most recent win 27-0 win over Minnesota last weekend.
With a battle between two seemingly elite defenses, it’s quite possible that this one turns into a really low-scoring affair. But for anyone interested in seeing whether the Wildcats or Wolverines are for real, this game is a can’t miss.
Writer’s Prediction: Michigan makes it four wins in a row with a 13-6 win.
Navy Midshipmen vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Where: Notre Dame Stadium, South Bend
When: Saturday, October 10, 3:30 PM ET
Line: Navy Midshipmen (+14.5) at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-14.5) – view all NCAA Football lines
TV Broadcast: NBC
The Red River Shootout isn’t the only big rivalry game on tap this weekend. Navy and No. 15 Notre Dame will battle for the 88th consecutive time on Saturday to extend their longest uninterrupted intersectional rivalry in college football.
The Irish, who are coming off their first loss of the season to Clemson, will definitely be wary of having their playoff hopes torpedoed by Navy and their quarterback Keenan Reynolds. In Reynolds’ two years as the starter in Navy’s triple-option offense, the Midshipmen have scored 34 and 39 points against the Irish defense. Notre Dame won both games, but Navy was able to cover spreads of 16.5 and 14 points.
Writer’s Prediction: Notre Dame gets the 35-31 win, but Navy (+14.5) covers again.
California Golden Bears vs. Utah Utes
Where: Rice-Eccles Stadium, Salt Lake City
When: Saturday, October 10, 10:00 PM ET
Line: California Golden Bears (+7.5) at Utah Utes (-7.5) – view all NCAA Football lines
TV Broadcast: ESPN
With traditional Pac-12 powers USC, UCLA, Stanford and Oregon, already tasting defeat this season, the last two teams with unbeaten records in the conference are Cal and Utah. Those two will fight for the right to be the last perfect team standing on Sunday.
4-0 Utah is up to the dizzying heights of No. 5 in the AP Poll (and even had seven first-place votes!) after it absolutely stomped Oregon, 62-20, in Eugene. For anyone that still has some serious reservations about the Utes’ sudden ascent, then you’d better tune in to ESPN when the Utes take on No. 23 Cal.
The Golden Bears are still a perfect 5-0 this season, thanks in large part to the golden arm of quarterback Jared Goff (15 TDs, four INTs). But Utah’s dominant front seven is a major step up in competition for the junior QB, who probably hasn’t yet faced a competent defense this season.
Writer’s Prediction: Cal upsets Utah, 38-31.
