The New England Patriots are making a push to make it to the playoff picture, which means there isn’t much room for losses for Bill Belichick and company. Up next for them is a match against the struggling Los Angeles Chargers, who remains a very dangerous opponent, thanks in large part to the play of their young quarterback. Betting on the New England Patriots (+1)
Regular Season Record: 5-6
The Patriots averted what could have been a disastrous loss to their dim playoff chances by sneaking out of the desert last week with a 20-17 road win over the Arizona Cardinals. Despite the win, there’s nothing to be happy about for the Patriots about the performance of quarterback Cam Newton, who passed for just 84 yards with zero touchdowns and a pair of interceptions on just 9-of-18 completions. But Newton can cook up some huge plays against the Chargers’ defense that has allowed the most 40+ yards passing plays this season. So long as Newton remains that shaky under center, the pressure will always be high for the Patriots’ defense to make stops. Which they did against the Cardinals, as they allowed just 160 passing yards to Kyler Murray while limiting DeAndre Hopkins to only 55 receiving yards. The Patriots’ secondary will be looking to ambush Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert’s passes, as New England is fourth in the league with 12 interceptions.
The over is 6-4 in the Patriots’ last 10 road games.
Betting on the Los Angeles Chargers (-1)
Regular Season Record: 3-8
The Chargers are coming off a 27-17 road loss to the Buffalo Bills. Justin Herbert managed to pass for 316 yards and a touchdown, but was intercepted once and got sacked three times for a loss of 25 yards. If anything, at least the Chargers got to see running back Austin Ekeler in action again after missing him for weeks due to an injury. Ekeler led the team with 44 rushing yards and 85 receiving yards. The Chargers’ defense was fantastic despite the loss to the Bills, as it forced three turnovers. Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa had all of the team’s three sacks against the Bills. He’ll be crucial in making passing plays even tougher for the Patriots, who are already among the worst in that department this season.
The over is 3-0 in the last three home games of the Chargers, who are averaging 25.2 points per game.
Writer’s Prediction
The Chargers win, 24-20.
