Betting on the New York Jets (+3.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-3
There are still a lot of uncertain things about the Jets’ future, but here’s one that’s sure: they won’t be ending the 2021 NFL regular season winless. That’s after Robert Saleh steered the Jets to an upset 27-34 overtime home win against the Tennessee Titans in Week 4. The confidence the Jets got from that win could go a long way for Zach Wilson and company, especially going into a matchup against a struggling Atlanta side. Wilson is far from becoming a fully polished quarterback in the NFL, but he’s showing maturity in the pocket. He passed for 297 yards and two touchdowns with an interception on 21/34 completions against Tennessee. Atlanta’s pass defense was ripped apart by Taylor Heinicke for three touchdowns, so Wilson might be able to light it up again this coming Sunday. But it’s the Jets’ pass rush that might be the biggest key to another win for the team. The Jets sacked Ryan Tannehill seven times for a loss of 45 Titans yards. Matt Ryan should be sweating right now.
The under is 5-1 in the Jets’ last six Week 5 games.
Betting on the Atlanta Falcons (-3.5)
Regular Season Record: 1-3
The Falcons are back to their losing ways after absorbing a 34-30 loss at home to the Washington Football Team. Matt Ryan had 283 passing yards and four touchdowns without an interception on 25/42 completions. Ryan is still capable of coming away with a performance that reminds us why he is a former NFL MVP, and he could do it again against the Jets. Granted that New York’s defense stepped up big time in Week 4, it also benefited from the Titans not having both AJ Brown and Julio Jones. Ryan doesn’t have that kind of lethal downfield threats either, but he’s got his starters healthy and ready to roll. Plus, running back Cordarelle Patterson has become a serious threat in Atlanta’s passing attack. He had three touchdowns and 82 receiving yards on five catches and six targets against Washington. Patterson could continue finding success while Calvin Ridley and Kyle Pitts stretch the field for him.
Writer’s Prediction
The Falcons win, 23-20.
