Betting on the New York Yankees
Masahiro Tanaka (5-4, 5.86 ERA) was just plain unfortunate in his last start. After a four-start stretch in which he gave up 21 total earned runs, Tanaka appeared to have rediscovered his touch when he allowed just one earned run and struck out 13 in 7.1 innings, albeit, in a 4-1 home loss to Oakland.
The Yankees’ offense simply wasn’t there for Tanaka but the Bronx Bombers have a chance tonight to make amends. With Baltimore sending Kevin Gausman to the mound, Brett Gardner, Ronald Torreyes, and Starlin Castro have themselves a pitcher they’ve had much success against in the past. Gardner is 11-for-34 (.324) in his career against Gausman. Torreyes is 5-for-12 (.417) in the matchup, while Castro is 7-for-20 (.350).
This is Tanaka’s second start against the Orioles this year. The Japanese export had a no-decision on Apr. 8, when he yielded three earned runs on six hits in a 5-4 home loss. He is 1-1 with a 2,74 ERA in six starts against the Orioles.
Betting on the Baltimore Orioles
For the third time this season, Kevin Gausman is going to take the mound against the Yankees. Gausman didn’t pick up a decision in the first two starts—with an unsatisfying 7.59 ERA in those meetings—and will be looking to come away with a victory later tonight.
Gausman (1-2, 6.17 ERA) pitched for 4.2 innings and allowed four earned runs and eight hits in a 5-4 win at Camden Yards on Apr. 8. His second encounter this year with the Yankees was in the Big Apple, giftwrapping the Yankees with five earned runs on eight hits during a high-scoring 14-11 loss on Apr. 28. In his career, Gausman is 3-2 with a 3.02 ERA in 10 games at the new Yankee Stadium.
Baltimore’s active roster has a collective batting average of just .216 against Tanaka but the Orioles could still capitalize on the Yankees pitcher’s inconsistency.
Adam Jones is a career .267 (4-for-15) hitter against Tanaka though the outfielder remains a question mark to play tonight. Jones has missed the past four games due to ankle troubles. The Orioles hasn’t put him on the disabled list, however, so there’s a chance he could be back on the field later tonight.
