Betting on the New York Yankees (8-15)
CC Sabathia’s stuff no longer has the bite that it used to have but he’ll have to bring his best nonetheless later tonight against the hard-hitting Orioles.Sabathia has been consistent this season though not in the ideal sense. He’s allowed three earned runs in all of his four starts, which includes a 3-2 loss to Texas on April 27. The stocky hurler also gave up for five hits and issued three free passes, while striking out five across six innings n that game.
Sabathia’s basic stats of 1-2 record and 5.06 ERA, however, may be a little deceiving. For one, he has surrendered just one homer thus far this season and is carrying a 3.96 FIP, suggesting that the Yankees’ defense shares the blame for his .338 BABIP.
Regardless of how Sabathia performs, the Yankees’ bats will have to show signs of life. Sabathia’s actually been getting a decent amount of run support with a 5.48 RS/9.
Starlin Castro has been the most productive Yankees hitter of late with a .429 batting average over the last six games. Mark Teixeira is next to him, but the switch-hitter only hit .238 during the same stretch.
The Yankees are 3-1 in Sabathia’s last four road starts dating back to last year.
Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (14-10)
Beware CC Sabathia: The O’s know how to bring the power against lefty starters. In fact, Baltimore is first in the American League with a .438 SLG opposite southpaws and second in OPS (.748).
Beating Sabathia has also been a constant for Baltimore over the past few years as the Orioles are 4-0 in their last four games against the Yankees when the pitcher is on the mound.
Moreover, the Orioles’ lineup features plenty of hitters who’ve done well against Sabathia. There’s Nolan Reimold, who owns a career .375 batting average to go with two homers and five RBIs versus the lefty. Adam Jones, meanwhile, sports a nice .311 average (19-for-61) along with four home runs and 14 RBIs against Sabathia.
Starting for Baltimore is Tyler Wilson, who had a decent outing the last time he toed the slab. Wilson gave up two earned runs on four hits though he pitched in only 4.2 innings of a 10-2 win over the White Sox on April 28. On the season, Wilson is 1-0 with a 3.06 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.
Writer’s Prediction
Baltimore wins, 6-3.
