Betting on the New York Yankees (45-21)

Moneyline: +123

As of this writing, the Yankees have yet to name a starting pitcher for their first game of the season’s second half but that role could be Masahiro Tanaka’s after getting five days of rest. Tanaka was on the mound when the Yankees lost to the Milwaukee Brewers at home on Jul. 9, 5-3, allowing five earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. He is 1-1 with a 3.21 ERA in two starts against the Red Sox this season, however. Tanaka is 7-8 with a 47 ERA this season.

Behind Tanaka is the Yankees’ lineup that boasts of a Godzilla in Aaron Judge, the freshly minted Home Run Derby champion. Judge closed out the first half with slashes of .329/.448/.691 with a league-leading 30 homers.

Betting on the Boston Red Sox (50-39)

Moneyline: -133

The Red Sox welcome the second half of the season by sending Drew Pomeranz to the mound. The lefty will begin his post-All-Star break campaign with some momentum, having gone 3-0 with a 1.82 ERA in his last five starts. On the season, Pomeranz is 9-4 with a 3.60 ERA in 17 starts so far.

Pomeranz last saw action on Jul. 7, going six innings long in which he surrendered just two earned runs on six hits in an 8-3 road win over the Tampa Bay Rays. He did issue five free passes but that’s likely just an aberration as he’s not given up more than three walks in any of his previous starts.

Looking to punish New York’s pitching staff, meanwhile, is Hanley Ramirez. Ramirez is 5-for-11 with a homer in his last three outings.

Writer’s Prediction

Boston (-133) wins, 5-4.
