Rick Porcello

Bryan Mitchell is all set to make his first start of the season when he toes the rubber later today at Fenway Park. Mitchell has appeared in 12 games this season, collecting a 5.06 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. Mitchell, however, was decent in the five starts he had last season for the Bronx Bombers, going 1-2 with a 3.24 ERA. Two of those starts were against Boston, going 0-0 with a solid 2.31 ERA.

Boston won’t be utilizing a converted starter, though, and instead would be giving the ball to 2016 AL Cy Young winner Rick Porcello. Porcello is just 4-11 with a 4.75 ERA in 19 starts this year but is coming off a strong start, albeit in a 1-0 road loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Jul. 8, pitching for eight inning and giving up just an earned run on six hits.

Writer’s Prediction

Boston wins, 5-3.

Second Game (8:00 PM ET)

Masahiro Tanaka

Masahiro Tanaka and David Price are each looking to get a good start in the season’s second half after topsy-turvy performances in the first half. Tanaka is just 7-8 with a 5.47 ERA in 18 starts this season and had an ugly outing just before the All-Star break, yielding five earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings of a 5-3 home loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Jul. 9. He is 2-1 with a 4.15 ERA in his last three starts.

Price, meanwhile, missed the first two months of the season due to an elbow injury and currently keeps a 4-2 record and a 3.91 ERA. He was rocked the last time he faced the Yankees, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in a 9-1 loss in the Big Apple last Jun. 8th. Price is 14-11 with a 4.69 ERA in 36 career starts versus the Yankees.

Writer’s Prediction

New York wins, 4-2.
