New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers Predictions, Picks and MLB Preview – April 8, 2016

The Detroit Tigers have been a bundle of power at the plate this early in the season. They intend to show some of it to their home fans later today when they play their first game in Comerica Park. The New York Yankees, meanwhile, have won three-straight in Detroit last year and they eye an extension of that streak when they give the ball to Luis Severino.  For more baseball, you can also read our preview of Red Sox vs. Blue Jays.

Luis Severino was a revelation for the Yankees last season and this year, the Dominican hurler is out to prove that his strong rookie campaign was no fluke.

Severino will make his season debut later today on the road, as he takes on the hard-hitting Tigers lineup.  The righty finished his first year in the majors with a 5-3 record and a 2.89 ERA. He did well away from Bronx, going 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA across six road starts in 2015. Severino hasn’t pitched in Comerica Park before but veteran teammates Carlos Beltran and Alex Rodriguez can tell him some cool stories of how well they’ve hit in that park in previous years.

Beltran, who turns 39 on April 24, has career slashes of .291/.346/.524 with seven homers in Comerica Park. Rodriguez, meanwhile, has hit .276/.361/.479 with nine bombs in the same venue.

Starlin Castro has also given the Yankees’ offense a jolt. He’s hit 7-for-12 with two homers and eight RBIs in his first three games in New York pinstripes.

The Yankees went 3-1 in Detroit last year.

Betting on the Detroit Tigers (2-0)

Ian Kinsler runs around the bases

The Tigers must have gotten a master’s degree in mashing balls during the offseason. At least that’s what it looks like after Detroit swept the Marlins in a brief two-game interleague series. Detroit beat Miami on Tuesday, 8-7, and on Wednesday, 7-3.

Now playing in Comerica Park, the Tigers are looking to carry over that robust offense into tonight’s game. The Tigers have hit five homers in the Marlins series with Victor Martinez hitting two. Ian Kinsler, meanwhile, is the hottest Tigers hitter right now with a 5-for-11 batting line to go with a homer and four RBIs. Kinsler hit .297 with six homers in Comerica Park last season.

This kind of offense is what former Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann is hoping to get from his teammates later today. Zimmerman finished 2015 with 13-10 record and 3.66 ERA across 33 starts for Washington last season. That includes a lone start against the Yankees on May 20, when he allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out six in seven frames of a 3-2 win.

The under is 4-2 in Detroit’s last six home games.
