Betting on the New York Yankees (37-23)
The Bronx Bombers will enter this series against the Angels in irresistible form. The Yanks are currently on a five-game winning streak, and beat the Red Sox and Orioles by a combined score of 55-9. They unleashed an offensive onslaught in their last two games to complete the sweep against the O’s, totaling 30 runs on 33 hits.
Aaron Judge has continued to lead the charge for New York. The prodigious rookie has 10 hits in his last 16 at-bats, and has gone seven of his last eight. He went a perfect 4-of-4 last night with two home runs, which includes a 496-foot moon shot. That’s the longest recorded homer since ESPN began tracking home runs in 2009.
Not to be outdone, Gary Sanchez has been on his own hot streak. The second-year slugger has gone 8-of-17 with four homers and 12 RBIs in his last four games alone.
Tonight’s starter, Masahiro Tanaka, will certainly appreciate that sort of run support as he looks to get back on track. Tanaka has had a very bumpy last couple of starts. He’s given up 27 earned runs and 11 home runs in his last 22.2 innings over five starts. The Yankees have lost all five of those games.
Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (33-33)
The Angels have been hanging in there without Mike Trout. They’re 7-6 in 13 games sans their superstar outfielder, and just took two out of three games on the road against the best team in the majors, the Houston Astros.
The LA offense has scored nine or more runs in three of the last four games, and exploded for 12 more runs in last night’s series-clinching 12-6 win. Kole Calhoun has been instrumental in that recent hot streak. He’s hitting a blistering .419/.500/.806 in the month of June, with four homers and 10 RBIs.
Eric Young Jr. has also done very well since filling in for Trout in center field. He’s hitting .314 with two homers and seven RBIs in 13 games.
That offense will look to supply more run support for tonight’s starter Alex Meyer. The 6-foot-9 righty has won just one of his last four starts despite throwing at least six innings of one-run ball in three of those starts. He didn’t even give up a single earned run in his last start against the Detroit Tigers, but still took the 4-0 loss.
Writer’s Prediction
Meyer is unable to cool off the Yankees bats as New York (-120) extends its win streak to six.
