Betting on the New York Yankees (38-24)

Moneyline: -138

The New York Yankees saw their impressive six-game win streak come to an end on Tuesday, losing the second of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels in extra innings, 3-2.

It was the first time that the Yankees were held to less than five runs in a contest since losing at home to Boston prior to their six-game tear. In fact, they’ve scored a mind-boggling average of 10 runs during that high-powered streak.

Although Aaron Judge, who sports the majors’ best batting average (.341) and is the current leader in home runs (22), went 0-for-4 in the loss, there’s reason to be optimistic that his bat will catch fire once more in Wednesday’s series finale in Anaheim. The sensational rookie has nine hits, three homers and eight runs batted-in over the past three games alone.

More good news for New York’s offense is that shortstop Didi Gregorious further extended his hit streak to 15 games in Tuesday’s contest.

The Yanks should be in good hands with Michael Pineda (7-3, 3.39 ERA) set to take the mound on Wednesday. The Dominican righty had a phenomenal outing the last time out, allowing just one earned run and racking up eight strikeouts through seven innings versus his team’s rivals in the Red Sox.

Betting on the Los Angeles Angels (34-34)

Moneyline: +128

Boy, were the Los Angeles Angels fortunate to pull through with a narrow victory in the 11th inning of their second bout against the Yankees this week. They’ve lost all four of their previous contests wherein they managed to score just three runs, but Tuesday night’s win certainly was a welcome exception.

The Angels really need to get some momentum going, as they are a mediocre 6-6 over their last 12 games and have not had a win streak of three or more games since May 24.

A clutch performance courtesy of the walk-off RBI single from Eric Young Jr. may just be the spark Los Angeles Needs. Young, who also tied Tuesday’s contest with a solo shot out of the park in the eighth inning, appears to be his team’s best hope of being competent on offense in the absence of the still-injured Mike Trout (thumb). He has eight hits, six RBIs and a couple of long balls over his last six starts.

The Halos, who are a middle-of-the-pack team in runs scored this season with 284 (16th) and a mere 26th in team batting average at .239, can’t keep relying on close games to keep them afloat. Their offense has got to come alive outside of Young’s heroics, especially with David Shoemaker (6-3, 4.22 ERA) penciled-in as Wednesday’s starter.

Shoemaker looked shook in his last start against the team with the best record in the majors, the Houston Astros. Although he picked up a win as his Los Angeles teammates backed him up with nine runs, he did still give up four runs on seven hits while striking out just four Houston batters on June 9. Furthermore, Shoemaker ended up with a losing decision in each of his two-career starts against the Yanks to go with a mere 4.05 ERA.

Writer’s Prediction

The Yankees (-138) get back to their prolific scoring ways and take the rubber match against the Angels, 7-3.
