Betting on the New York Yankees (49-45)
Although his control wasn’t exactly precise in his last start, CC Sabathia did just enough on the mound to blank the Boston Red Sox in a 3-0 road win on Jul. 16. Sabathia tosses for six innings in that game and allowed just two hits, albeit issuing also five walks.
The stocky lefty will get back on the mound later tonight at Safeco Field, which seemingly has been very good to Sabathia (8-3, 3.54 ERA) in his career. Dating back to 2002, Sabathia is 9-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 13 starts there.
The pair of Chase Headley and Clint Frazier has been among the most productive Yankees hitters this month. Headley, as of this writing, is 15-for-55 at the plate in July, while Frazier is 14-for-47 with three homers.
Betting on the Seattle Mariners (48-49)
After taking a beating in his first road career road start, getting tagged with five earned runs on six hits in just three innings, albeit in a 7-6 win over the Chicago White Sox on Jul. 16, Andrew Moore is set to pitch at home later tonight.
That could be taken as a bit of good news for Moore, who is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts at Safeco Field this season. Moore handled himself well in his most recent home start, lasting six innings in a 4-3 loss to the Oakland A’s on Jul. 8, when he allowed three earned runs on six hits.
Seattle’s hitters, meanwhile, are looking to change the usual narrative of Sabathia dominating at their own diamond. Among them is Danny Valencia, who is 8-for-28 with a homer in his career against Sabathia. Former Yankee Robinson Cano is 4-for-17 against the pitcher.
Writer’s Prediction
New York (-120) wins, 5-4.
