Ian Book is now in the NFL, but a new face can sufficiently cover the void he left on Notre Dame’s offense. That’s Wisconsin Badgers transfer Jack Coan. He did not see action in 2020, but in 2019, he had 2,7,27 passing yards and 18 touchdowns against five interceptions while completing 69.9 of his passes. Coan should be able to drive and sustain Notre Dame’s offense that was 27th a season ago with 33.4 points per game and 23rd with 448.4 total yards per contest. He can have fun marching the offense downfield with the help of tight end Michael Mayer, who had 450 receiving yards and two touchdowns on 42 receptions. Add to that mix the duo of Kyren Williams and Chris Tyree who both return after going first and second, respectively, in rushing yards in South Bend in 2020. Defensively, there’s still so much to like about the Fighting Irish’s stop unit, especially since it has a new defensive coordinator in Marcus Freeman.
Notre Dame is 4-2 against the spread in its last six games overall.
Betting on the Florida State Seminoles (+7.5)
Record: 0-0 Overall / 0-0 Conference
The ‘Noles are coming off a rough season in which they went 3-6 overall and just 2-6 in the ACC. But at least they won their last game of the 2020 season by defeating the Duke Blue Devils at home, 56-35. Florida State has UCF transfer McKenzie Milton under center, but it’s hard to know whether he’s truly healthy and if he’d be effective again in driving the team’s offense that sputtered in 2020. The Seminoles averaged just 23.9 points and converted on just 31.9 percent of their third-down attempts. Whatever the case may be for Milton, Florida State is expected to get sophomore running back Jashaun Corbin more involved. He had 401 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 81 carries in 2020. The defense should more of a focus in this game for Florida State, particularly against the run, where it was obliterated by Notre Dame in last season’s 42-26 Seminoles loss in South Bend.
The over is 3-1 in Florida State’s last four games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Notre Dame wins, 34-23.
