Two struggling California teams will collide this coming Thursday to kick off the ninth week of the 2018 season. That’s the Oakland Raiders, who are seeking to break their three-game losing skid, and the equally stumbling San Francisco 49ers side that has not won anything since Week 2.
The Raiders are +100,000 to win the AFC West, while the 49ers have the exact same long odds to come out on top of the NFC West by the end of the regular season.

Betting on the Oakland Raiders (1-6)
Things continue to worsen for the Raiders, who drop to 1-6 after absorbing a 42-28 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at home. For a team playing its last season before relocating, losing that by that many points was not a very good sight for its home fans. But Raiders fans have to appreciate the efforts of quarterback Derek Carr in the Colts game. Carr passed for 244 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions on 21-of-28 completions. He also scored a rushing touchdown. Carr’s performance served as a nice reminder for the Raiders that he remains a capable quarterback and he could sustain that kind of performance this Thursday against a leaky San Francisco defense that is 28th in scoring defense with 29.5 points allowed per game and 21st against the pass with 262.5 passing yards surrendered per contest. With Marshawn Lynch likely out for the season, there’s an increased pressure for Carr to air the ball out, though, Doug Martin panned out nicely as a starter last week, rushing for 72 yards on 13 carries.
The under is 5-1 in the Raiders’ last six games.
Betting on the San Francisco 49ers (1-7)
Juts like Oakland, the 49ers failed to stop careening into another loss over the weekend, as they fell prey to the Arizona Cardinals on the road, 18-15. The Niners allowed Cardinals first-year quarterback Josh Rosen to get 252 passing yards and two touchdowns with just an interception. That’s not a good look on the part of San Francisco’s defense, but one has to dig a little deeper to appreciate the team’s defense. For one, Niners opponents hold the lowest passing completion percentage with a 59.47 clip. Against the Cardinals. In addition, San Francisco is coming off a solid defensive performance against the run, limiting the talented David Johnson to only 59 yards on 13 carries. All told, the Cardinals only had 88 rushing yards in the game. That Lynch will be unavailable this Thursday is good news for San Francisco’s defense that is allowing 102.9 rushing yards per game this season.
The over is 4-1 in the 49ers’ last five home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Oakland wins, 27-24.
