Betting on the Pittsburgh Panthers (+24)
Record: 5-4 Overall / 4-4 Conference
After losing four games in a row, the Panthers have now won back to back after defeating the Florida State Seminoles ( 41-17) on the road on Nov. 7 and the Virginia Tech Hokies at home last Saturday (47-14). While the offense has obviously been humming of late for the Panthers, their defense is also making that possible. Against the Hokies, Pittsburgh forced two turnovers and had two sacks to add to their total that is now at 40 quarterback takedowns — the most in the ACC. Pittsburgh’s defensive line is a menace, and it’s perhaps the Panthers’ best weapon in their attempt to upset Clemson. With Trevor Lawrence back under center for the Tigers, guys like Patrick Jones II and Rashad Weaver are expected to generate pressure up front for Pittsburgh. Jones has eight sacks on the season to lead the Panthers,m while Weaver is right behind him with 5.5 sacks. Six other Panthers have at least two sacks on the season.
Pittsburgh is 6-4 against the spread in its last 10 road games.
Betting on the Clemson Tigers (-24)
Record: 7-1 Overall / 6-1 Conference
Clemson will have to wait a little longer before it sees Trevor Lawrence make his return after being absent for a couple of weeks due to COVID-19. The Tigers were supposed to play the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee last Saturday, but disagreement between the two sides with regards to COVID-19 issues forced the game to be postponed at a later date. The Tigers last saw action on Nov. 7, when they suffered their first — and only so far — loss of the season at the hands of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on the road, 47-40. DJ Uiagalelei played well in lieu of Clemson over a two-game stretch, despite the loss to the Fighting Irish, but he’ll have to go back to his backup role this coming Saturday, with Lawrence aching to play again. On the season, Lawrence has 1,833 passing yards and 17 touchdowns with only two interceptions. In his last start, he threw for 289 passing yards and two touchdowns against an interception on 27-of-53 completions in a 47-21 home win over the Syracuse Orange on Oct. 24.
Clemson is 7-3 against the spread in its last 10 road games.
Writer’s Prediction
Clemson wins, 39-17.
