Betting on the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (+38)
Record: 1-1 Overall / 1-1 Conference
After shocking the Big Ten with a win in the opening week against the Michigan State Spartans, the Scarlet Knights failed to sustain their momentum from that win and lost at home to No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers last Saturday to the tune of a 37-21 score. Quarterback Noah Vedral completed 21 of 34 passes for 130 passing yards and two touchdowns but shot the Scarlet Knights in the foot with three interceptions. One bright spot for Rutgers in that game was the performance of running back Kay’Ron Adams, who rushed for 63 yards and a touchdown on just five carries. Rutgers is not a run-heavy team, but it will have to ask Adams and Isaih Pacheco to establish the run early against Ohio State to loosen things up for Vedral and the Scarlet Knights’ passing attack. In the win over Michigan State, Pacheco had 61 rushing yards and a couple of touchdowns on 19 carries, while Vedral, a dual-threat himself, had 24 rushing yards and a touchdown on nine carries. Rutgers’ defense, particularly against the run, has been consistently great so far this season. It is allowing just 2.0 rushing yards per carry, which is second-best in the nation, albeit on a small sample size.
Rutgers is 2-1 against the spread in its last three games overall.
Betting on the Ohio State Buckeyes (-38)
Record: 2-0 Overall / 2-0 Conference
With Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence sidelined due to COVID-19, it’s high time for Buckeyes signal-caller Justin Fields to show why he’s also in the conversation as the best in his position in college football. He added to his case when he destroyed the defense of the Penn State Nittany Lions in a 38-25 road win last Saturday. Fields passed for 318 yards and four touchdowns with zero interceptions on 28-of-34 completions. Meanwhile, running back Master Teague rushed for 110 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries. Although we mentioned Rutgers’ run defense that has been effective in the Scarlet Knights’ last two games, it has yet to face a rushing attack as good as Ohio State’s. And with Fields running things under center, it’s going to be tough for Rutgers to slow down Ohio State’s offense that is averaging 45.0 points and 508.5 total yards per game. Last year, Fields passed for 305 yards and tossed four touchdowns without an interception on 15-of-19 completed throws to lead the Buckeyes to a 56-21 win.
Ohio State is 5-1 against the spread in its last six games as the home team overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Ohio State wins, 48-23.
