It could be Trey Lance Time in Week 5 for San Francisco, and while the rookie quarterback is still an unproven commodity in the pros, he has shown enough promise to excite Niners fans. Jimmy Garoppolo is currently dealing with a calf injury that he believes could lead to him missing a couple of games. With that, Lance could get the start against the Cardinals this weekend on the road. Lance stepped in for Garoppolo in the second half of last Sunday’s 28-21 home loss to the Seattle Seahawks, passing for 157 yards and two touchdowns without an interception on 9/18 completions. He also rushed for 41 yards on just seven carries. It’s possible that he can go toe to toe with Kyler Murray better than Garoppolo as the leader for San Francisco’s offense that is seventh in the league with 26.8 points per game and No. 1 in red-zone touchdown scoring percentage (100%).
The 49ers are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games versus NFC West teams.
Betting on the Arizona Cardinals (-5.5)
Regular Season Record: 4-0
Last Sunday’s highly anticipated matchup between the Cardinals and the Los Angeles Rams was supposed to be a shootout, but it appears as though it was only Arizona who brought extra bullets. The Cardinals downed the Rams, 37-20, in a game that further proved Arizona as a legitimate Super Bowl contender. Kyler Murray went 24/32 for 268 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns while also avoiding throwing a pick. The backfield duo of Chase Edmonds and James Conner combined for 170 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 30 carries. Arizona’s offense is humming and it’s coming after the 49ers’ stop unit that is thin in the secondary. If the 49ers start Lance, the combo of Chandler Jones and J.J. Watt will be there to put him to a tough test. The Cardinals are limiting opponents to only 64.34 pass completion percentage, ninth-best in the NFL, so far this season.
The over is 6-1 in the Cardinals’ last seven home games.
Writer’s Prediction
The Cardinals win, 28-23.
