Regular Season Record: 3-5
Facing plenty of questions, the Niners silenced their detractors with a huge 31-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams at home in Week 10. The Rams were parading splashy new acquisitions in Odell Beckham Jr. and Von Miller for the first time, but that didn’t matter at all for the 49ers, whose defense suffocated the Rams. At the same time, Jimmy Garoppolo outplayed Matthew Stafford. Jimmy G passed for 182 yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions on 15/19 completions. Based on how the 49ers humbled the Rams, who are legitimate Super Bowl contenders, it would be difficult to go against them against the lowly Jaguars. The 49ers held the high-powered LA offense to only 278 total yards and forced two turnovers. It’s not a stretch to think that they will overpower a Jacksonville team that has an anemic offense, lousy defense, and has a penchant for committing lots of turnovers.
The 49ers are 5-2 against the spread in their last seven games as the road favorite.
Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (+6)
Regular Season Record: 2-7
Sure, the Jaguars have one of the worst defenses in the league, as they are allowing 25.8 points per game. But they have been better on that end of the field in the last two games. They didn’t allow a touchdown in their 9-6 upset win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 9 then held the Indianapolis Colts below 20 points in a 23-17 loss in Week 10. The confidence is building up for the Jags despite all the losing this season. If the bad version of the 49ers shows up this coming Sunday and the Jaguars continue to build on their newfound confidence, at least defensively, the game could play out close enough for Urban Meyer’s team to pounce on a cover. Remember that San Francisco is 25th in the NFL with 1.6 turnovers per game and 29th with a -0.8 turnover margin per contest.
The Jaguars are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games versus teams with losing records.
Writer’s Prediction
The 49ers win, 28-17.
