Betting on the San Francisco Giants (0-1)
So much for upgrading that bullpen in the offseason, eh?
The San Francisco Giants lost their season-opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks this past Sunday, 6-5, having squandered two separate leads in the eighth and ninth innings. They wasted a fantastic afternoon from ace Madison Bumgarner, who struck out 11 batters in six innings of work and also became the first pitcher in MLB history to hit two home runs on Opening Day.
The silver lining to the loss, if any, is that San Francisco’s back-half of the batting order is finally generating some offense. Brandon Crawford and Eduardo Nunez combined to go 5-for-9 with two runs hitting in the fifth and sixth holes, respectively.
With Johnny Cueto (18-5, 2.79 ERA in 2016) set to start this Tuesday, the Giants are in good shape to notch their first win of the season. The Dominican righty, who has 16 complete games since 2011, has held the Diamondbacks as a whole to a dismal .220 batting average. In fact, only Jake Lamb has a batting average of over .300 amongst all Arizona players that have seen more than five at-bats against Cueto.
You can also chalk up Sunday’s loss as a blip of sorts, as the Giants have won 13 of their last 15 meetings against the D’backs prior to that defeat.
Betting on the Arizona Diamondbacks (1-0)
Sunday’s win is a good omen that perhaps the Arizona Diamondbacks can indeed turn things around this 2017.
The best news coming from the team’s camp is that A.J. Pollock is healthy and intially producing well again after suffering elbow and groin injuries that cut his season short last year. Pollock went 3-of-5 for a couple of runs and RBIs alike against the Giants, and he was also aided by star player Paul Goldschmidt (2-of-4 with a run batted-in) at the top of the order.
Unfortunately, the Diamondbacks won’t relish having Patrick Corbin (5-13, 5.15 ERA last season) starting opposite of Cueto in Tuesday’s contest. San Francisco’s batters have a collective batting average of .313 against the lefty, with Hunter Pence having hit .480 in 25 at-bats to go with four homers and nine RBIs.
Then again, the D’backs should still be able to feed off of the early-season energy coming from the home crowd at Chase Field, where they’ve won five-straight and nine of their last 11 dating back to the previous season.
