Matt Moore had a tough outing in his season debut, as he gave up six runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks across 5.1 innings. The Giants fell to the Diamondbacks for the second time in the series, 8-6.

Following the veteran lefty is Jeff Samardzija. “Shark” is entering his second year in San Francisco, and he’ll look to be better since he only put up a 12-11 record with a decent 3.81 ERA last season.

Basing on his production versus Arizona in 2016 (2-0, 2.91 ERA), we can be positive that he can be good tomorrow night. Also, the D’Backs’ current hitters are only batting .237 against him, with Paul Goldschmidt going 3-for-21 and nine strikeouts.

As for the offense, we should see the usual suspects doing their work well and providing damage soon enough. Buster Posey had a pair of hits in his three plate appearances last night, with one run and walk, while Brandon Crawford went 1-for-3, with one run and an RBI. Their reigning leader in homers, Brandon Belt, should also progress as they go along, he’s now 4-for-14, with one homer, two runs, two RBIs, and three walks.

Off-season acquisition Taijuan Walker, who the D’Backs got in a trade with the Seattle Mariners, was the team’s starter in last night’s contest. Like Moore, he didn’t have a solid debut, as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits in the six innings he threw for.

Still, a win is a win, and he did have seven strikeouts, which should somehow make up for the hits. The great batting also covered up most of the the pitching mishaps, with eight different batters recording a hit, six of which had RBIs. Paul Goldschmidt isn’t on that group, but he had one run and two walks in three at-bats.

As mentioned above, though, Goldschimdt and company haven’t performed up to par opposite Samardzija. We’ll see if they can turn that around Thursday night.

Starting next for ‘Zona on the mound is Robbie Ray. The young lefty (24 years) concluded 2016 owning an 8-15 win-loss card with a 4.90 ERA. However, it’s a season that saw him draw the most starts, win the most games, pitch in the most innings, and stikeout the most players (218) in his career.

Additionally, 12.4 percent of his pitches got swung on and missed last season, and it is good for top 15 overall in the MLB.

Writer’s Prediction
