The Giants are struggling this season in part because of crappy pitching of their starters, including Jeff Samardzija. Samardzija started the season grasping for form, going 0-4 with a 6.32 ERA in five starts.

The Shark did much better in his most previous outing, though, and he’s hoping that it’s a start of a positive trend. While he figured in a no-decision in a 4-3 home win over San Diego on Apr. 28, he allowed just two earned runs on four hits while striking out five across seven innings. Prior to that, Samardzija has allowed at least four earned runs in three of his previous four starts.

Samardzija needs more good starts for the Giants to feel real confident on him working the mound. Until then, the Giants’ offense has to step up. Speaking of stepping up, Buster Posey is 6-for-19 (.316) in his past five games as of this writing. Call-up Christian Arroyo, meanwhile, is 7-for-24 (.292) with two homers and five RBI’s in his last six.

Julio Urias gets the Giants again after facing them in a 5-1 road win on Apr. 27. In that game, Urias pitched for 5.2 innings, giving up only one earned run on four hits, while issuing four free passes and four K’s. He didn’t pick up a win but it was a solid outing nonetheless from the 20-year-old lefty.

Urias might still be limited in tonight’s game after being pulled from his previous start after just 90 pitches. In that case, the Dodgers’ solid bullpen should have his back. The Dodgers’ relievers are sporting a collective ERA of 3.10 with a 2.57 FIP per Fangraphs.

Conversely, the Dodgers could take advantage of the Giants’ weak bullpen that parades a 4.91 ERA and a 3.25 FIP.

The Dodgers’ hitters have a career batting average of .299 against Samardzija. Chase Utley is batting just .114 this season but is .333 (7-for-31) with three doubles and a homer opposite the Giants’ starter.
