Betting on the San Francisco Giants (23-35)

Moneyline: -126

Sunday’s offensive outburst from the San Francisco Giants came up short against the Philadelphia Phillies’ own barrage, as the home team went on to win, 9-7. The Giants, losers of seven of their last 10 games, will now look to cap off their seven-game road trip with a four-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers beginning this Monday.

San Francisco has scored 22 runs in its three-game series against the Phillies, but it wasn’t until Monday’s contest that the team hit its first home run in six contests. That dinger was courtesy of Brandown Crawford, who drove in four runs in the loss. More help in the batting order has arrived as well for the Giants, as Hunter Pence made his return in Sunday’s game after being held out of action since May 13 with a hamstring injury.

Stangely enough, though, it’s San Francisco’s pitching that has really been struggling amidst their season-long slump, and we should expect another inconsistent performance from the mound this Monday with Jeff Samardzija (1-7, 4.63 ERA) penciled-in to start. The 32-year-old righty lasted just four innings in his last start after allowing three runs in 100 pitches to the Nationals for his seventh losing decision of the season.

Look for Milwaukee to take advantage of The Shark in the opener of their four-game home stand against the Giants. Samardzija has a 2-6 lifetime recored against the Brewers, with three of those losses coming at Miller Park.

Betting on the Milwaukee Brewers (30-27)

Moneyline: +116

The Milwaukee Brewers came away with a 3-0 shutout of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday to avoid the series sweep against the reigning NL West champs.

The Brewers, who are sixth in the majors in runs scored, needed just three runs to salvage their three-game set versus the Dodgers. Expect their offense to get better in the days ahead, as breakout sensation Eric Thames connected on his 15th homer of the season in the victory. Thames hasn’t gone yard at home in almost a month, so his power behind the plate is a welcome boost for his team.

Not only that, but shortstop Eric Sogard is also contributing well of late at the top of the Brew Crew’s batting order. Sogard drove in a run in Sunday’s win, giving him five RBIs and as many runs scored in seven starts as the team’s leadoff batter.

Zach Davies had a phenomenal outing on Sunday with his seven innings of three-hit ball, and Milwaukee will follow-up that performance with a resurgent Junior Guerra (1-0, 1.84 ERA) set to start Monday’s series opener against the Giants. The right-handed Venezuelan has been impressive in his two starts coming off a calf injury he sustained on Opening Day. Guerra has only allowed one run in 10.2 innings of work in his last couple of starts, recently blanking the Mets on May 31st in six fantastic innings.

With their bats back up to par and with a dependable starter on tap, expect the Brewers to draw first blood in their four-game set against the visiting Giants.

Writer’s Prediction

Milwaukee (+116) routs San Fran, 6-2.
