The glitz and glamor of the Wimbledon Championships could be too much for some. Not so for world No. 1 Serena Williams, a six-time defending champion at Wimbledon. It’s very tough to be drawn against the defending champion of any sport in the first round—even more tough if she’s considered one of the greatest in her sport. Such is the predicament of Amra Sadikovic, making her first trip to Wimbledon.

Betting on Serena Williams (-5,000)
Serena Williams failed to win any of the first two Grand Slams of the year, despite playing in the finals of the Australian and French Opens. Those defeats should light a fire up her butt to dominate at Wimbledon, which is why she’s the +140 favorite to win the tournament. Williams’ struggles weren’t all in the Grand Slams, also lucking out in the final of Indian Wells. However, she does have a title from Rome on clay.
The world No. 1 should be tough to beat in this match. She hasn’t lost in the first round of a Grand Slam since the 2012 French Open. Williams has also been dominant on grass, winning 15 of her last 17 matches on the surface. She should also be near full health heading into Wimbledon having not played since her Roland Garros final loss to Garbine Muguruza.Williams’ price as a -5,000 favorite to win this match is still very steep, considering she could possibly carry plenty of rust onto the tennis court. But she has beaten better players at less than 100 percent, which could mean that she’s up for a cake walk.
Betting on Amra Sadikovic (+2,000)
Amra Sadikovic is facing the best WTA player on the planet, but she could be very confident looking at her current form. The 27-year-old Swiss didn’t lose a single set in three matches of qualifying for the Wimbledon Championships. She’s also won seven of her last 11 matches overall. Sadikovic returned from retirement last year and is in her best ranking of her career sitting around the top 150.
The Swiss has been very successful on the ITF level and reached a final in Kreuzlingen. While the WTA is on a whole ‘nother level compared than what Sadikovic is used to, she should still carry some confidence just by judging her winning six of her last nine matches on grass.
Sadikovic has never made it out of the first round of a Grand Slam.
Writer’s Prediction
Williams (-5,000) underperforms and gives away a couple more games too many, but still gets the job done in straight sets.
