Betting on Venus Williams (-1,000)
Venus Williams has struggled to string together wins this year. She only managed a winning streak when she won her 49th career title in Kaohsiung—not exactly a tournament brimming with talent—and reaching he fourth round of the French Open. The former world No. 1 has skipped all the grass court tournaments ahead of Wimbledon, which could leave her rusty in this upcoming match.
Williams is now 36-yeards-old but her serve and powerful frame remain her best attributes. She’s been especially successful on grass, as evidenced by her five career Wimbledon titles. The older Williams sister has only lost to eventual champions at this tournament, which Donna Vekic might not be considering her relative inexperience being just a teenager. The former Wimbledon champion has only lost two first round matches in 18 attempts at Wimbledon.
Betting on Donna Vekic (+600)
There have been some ramblings and great expectations for Donna Vekic in recent years, which could overwhelm a youngster like her. She hasn’t lived up to those expectations having won only two main draw matches at the WTA level. Things have been bad for the 19-year-old Croat, having lost her last eight matches on the WTA tour dating back to February.
Vekic had shown some promise on grass courts when she reached the Birmingham final in 2013. That’s as far as she went as she’s failed to win a match on the grass court in the WTA Tour, failing to qualify in Birmingham or Eastbourne. However, three years and plenty of losses opens up a wealth of experience for Vekic, which she could use to surprise at this tournament.
Vekic is an aggressive player and could use her youthful energy to upset an aging former champion, Venus Williams. The Croat already has a victory over a top-ranked player under her belt when she upset then top-10 ranked Dominika Cibulkova to win her first career title in Kuala Lumpur in 2014.
Writer’s Prediction
It’s a shocker. Vekic pulls off the upset as a +600 underdog. She takes advantage of a rusty Williams to take a hard-earned three-set victory.
