Seton Hall Pirates vs Marquette Golden Eagles Predictions, Picks, Odds, and NCAA Basketball Betting Preview – February 29 2020

The Seton Hall Pirates (+1700 to win the national title) are closing on the Big 12 regular-season title. A win over the Marquette Golden Eagles (+4000) will take them a step closer to that goal, but they will have to do it in Markus Howard and company’s lair, where the Golden Eagles have always victimized Seton Hall.

Betting on the Seton Hall Pirates (20-7 Overall / 23-3 Conference)

You can say that the Pirates are back on track. Following successive losses to the Creighton Bluejays and the Providence Friars, Myles Powell and the Pirates have taken down the Butler Bulldogs and the St. John’s Red Storm in back-to-back fashion. In their 81-65 win over St. John’s at home, the Pirates were led by Powell, who had 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists. Three other Seton Hall starters put up at least 12 points, while the Pirates held St. John’s down to only 33.8 percent shooting from the field. Seton Hall’s defense was in its usual level of ferocity, as the Pirates had 10 steals and seven blocks. Seton Hall is going to need the same effort on defense to stop Marquette again, especially on Golden  Eagles hotshot Markus Howard. The Pirates were burned by Howard for 27 points in their 69-55 home win back in January but limited the entire Marquette team down to only 42.7 percent shooting from the field. Conversely, Powell led the team with 23 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

The Pirates, who are 11th in the nation in defensive efficiency, are 3-3 against the spread (ATS) in their last six games.

Betting on the Marquette Golden Eagles (17-9 Overall / 7-7 Conference)

Unlike Seton Hall, the Golden Eagles are having trouble getting up on their feet. Marquette has lost all its last three games as of this writing, the latest was at the hands of the Friars, 84-72, on the road. The Golden Eagles will look to right the ship when they meet the Georgetown Hoyas at home this Wednesday. Whatever the result of that game, the Golden Eagles will need a total team effort to defeat the Pirates this coming weekend. The Golden Eagles left Howard to do most of the work in the first meeting with no other player on the team scoring more than nine points. The Pirates know that the way to stopping Marquette is by stopping Howard, so the Golden Eagles must mix it up on offense and avoid being too dependent on their scoring machine. On the season, Howard is averaging 27.1 points per game. Howard had 38 points in a losing effort against Providence.

The Golden Eagles are 8-2 straight-up (SU) in their last 1o home games against Seton Hall.

Writer’s Prediction

Marquette wins, 75-71.
