Betting on the Siena Saints (TBA)
Siena has split its first two games of the season. The Saints beat Ivy League school Cornell, 89-78, in the opener, but bowed out in a close 77-75 loss to George Washington two nights later, where they allowed a 14-0 run late in the second half.
The Saints are still led by shifty senior guard Marquis Wright, who poured in 31 (tied a career-high) and 21 points in the previous two outings, while also chipping in four rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
The sample size is quite small, but the team’s scoring has mainly revolved around four players. Wright, his co-seniors Brett Bisping and Javion Ogunyemi, and sophomore Nico Clareth, are all averaging 14 or more points, and have scored 140 of the Saints’ 164 total points this season.
Bisping, their hard-nosed four, is the best stat sheet-filler in the team. He leads the Saints in rebounds (10.5) and steals (2.0) per game, as well as field goal percentage (71.4), while also stroking it well from three, going 4-for-5 in their first pair of contests.
The Saints have done a nice job taking care of the ball, as they only have a total of 14 turnovers, good for 20th overall.
Betting on the Kansas Jayhawks (TBA)
Like their next opponents, the Jayhawks went 1-1 in their first two matchups. No need to worry, though. The loss was a competitive game against 13th-ranked Indiana. The win, on the other hand, was an entertaining 77-75 game against number one-ranked Duke, who have a bulk of talent on their roster.
Speedster Frank Mason has emerged as the probable top scorer for the team, averaging 25.5 points, five rebounds, and seven assists on 55.6-percent shooting from the perimeter. He was also the hero in the Duke game, as he sinked a tie-breaking jumper with only 1.8 ticks left.
The team’s most hyped freshman, Josh Jackson, who ESPN rated the best forward from the high school class of 2016, is still trying to earn his stripes. The athletic swingman is currently averaging the lowest minutes among all of head coach Bill Self’s starters, with 22.5 minutes per game. He’s making the most out of it so far, recording averages of 12 points and 4.5 rebounds, while making 50 percent of his shots.
Although this next game is basically target practice for the Jayhawks, they have to take it easy on taking threes. With a 22.5 percentage from deep (9-for-40), they are the worst among all ranked teams.
Nevertheless, Kansas should have no trouble getting this W. They have won 42 straight home openers; number 43 is on the way.
