2016 Stanford Cardinal Football Preview
Team Strengths:
There are some key losses on the offensive side for Stanford, which is +2,000 to win the national title, but at least the Cardinal get to keep their best player—running back Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey set turfs on fire last year, rushing for 2,019 yards and eight touchdowns while also making his presence felt in the passing game; McCaffrey also led the team in receiving yards with 645 to go with five touchdowns. The refurbished offense also features tight end Dalton Schultz and wideouts Francis Owusu and Trenton Irwin, who will all have to step up to mitigate the effects brought about the losses of tight end Austin Hooper and wide receiver Devon Cajuste, two of the team’s best targets in 2015.Team Weaknesses:
Unfortunately for Stanford, having McCaffrey alone will not hide its flaws. Among them is the Cardinal’s offensive line that lost three starters, including Josh Garnet, who was regarded as the best college interior lineman last season. Having an unproven set of offensive line doesn’t bode well for McCaffrey’s chances of matching or surpassing his exploits last year. The fact that the Cardinal have to break in a new starting quarterback also puts pressure on the o-line. Stanford is still currently choosing who between Keller Chryst and Ryan Burns will be the successor to Kevin Hogan.
