[sc:Football ]New England Defeats Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX Thriller
This time out it was the Seattle Seahawks who were left deflated by the New England Patriots.
[sc:NFL240banner ]Behind Tom Brady’s clutch fourth quarter drives and a game-saving goal line interception by Malcolm Butler, the New England Patriots successfully captured their first Super Bowl title since 2005 and their fourth overall, beating the Seahawks 28-24 on Sunday.
Brady, who won his third Super Bowl MVP, overcame a slow start and two interceptions to finish with 328 yards and four touchdowns on 37-for-50 completions.
The Patriots were trailing by 10 at the start of the fourth quarter, but New England was able to come back and take the lead for good thanks to Brady’s touchdown passes to Danny Amendola and Julius Edelman, the last coming with 2:02 left in regulation to put the Pats ahead.
Seattle got the ball back following Edelman’s touchdown, giving another opportunity for Russell Wilson to lead the Seahawks’ down the Patriots’ end zone. On the first play, Wilson completed a 31-yard pass to Marshawn Lynch to put Seattle on the Pats’ 49. A few plays later, Wilson hooked up with NFC Championship Game hero Jermaine Kearse for a huge 33-yard gain that brought the Seahawks to the Patriots’ five-yard line and was the play of the game. Lynch then ran the ball for four more yards, bringing Seattle’s offense to within one yard of the Pats’ end zone.
The Seahawks’ ecstasy after those two plays was quickly extinguished when Wilson’s pass targeted to Ricardo Lockette was intercepted by Butler. The undrafted rookie safety’s pick effectively ended the Seahawks’ back-to-back championship aspirations and cued the sideline celebrations by Bill Belichick and the rest of the Pats.
Wilson walked away with 247 yards on 12-for-21 passing and two touchdowns. He was also sacked three times, including one from Patriots defensive end Rob Ninkovich in the fourth quarter that forced Seattle to punt. Brady was sacked on the first play after that, but kept the drive alive, ending with Amendola’s touchdown grab.
Lynch, meanwhile, collected 102 yards on 24 carries and a touchdown, but much will be made of how Lynch did not get the ball at second and goal from the one. Pete Carroll and the Seahawks will be rethinking that play call for years to come, while Brady has already moved on: with his fourth ring secured, he has a legitimate claim to being the best quarterback ever.
