Betting on the Tennessee Titans (0-1)
The Tennessee Titans lost their season-opener for the second year running with a gut-wrenching 26-16 defeat to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The Titans simply had no answer for the returning Derek Carr who finished with 262 yards and a pair of touchdowns. It was a disappointing performance by the Titans who lost their third straight matchup to the Raiders in Nashville in as many years.
They will look to get their season back on track when they lock horns with the Jacksonville Jaguars this coming Sunday. For the Titans to record their first win of the new campaign, they will need to improve on their play on the offensive end. The Titans managed to put up just 350 total yards in their loss to the Raiders.
The onus then is on quarterback Marcus Mariota to step up his game against the Jags. The 23-year-old had a decent yet unspectacular return to regular-season action against Oakland, completing just 25-of-41 passes for 256 yards with no touchdowns. Deep threat Eric Decker was practically invisible in his debut for the Titans, finishing with a measly 10 yards on three catches. Establishing the pass early should help draw some of the pressure from the Titans’ running game. Derrick Henry and DeMarco Murray combined for just 69 yards on 18 carries in the loss to Oakland.
Tennessee will need to figure out how to re-establish its running game as the centerpiece of its offense. Murray and Henry are too talented to be used as a secondary piece in an evolving Titans offense. As a refresher, Tennessee had a top-5 rushing attack last year. They will have their work cut out for them, however, against a Jacksonville defensive line that allowed just 93 rushing yards in their season-opening win against Houston.
The Titans are 4-6 SU and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games.
Betting on the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-0)
The Jaguars’ 2017 NFL campaign is off to a promising start after they trounced the Houston Texans, 29-7, in their opening game on Sunday. Leonard Fournette dazzled in his debut for Jacksonville, rushing for 100 yards and a touchdown. The 22-year-old rookie is the first Jaguars running back to hit the century mark on the ground in his NFL debut. Jacksonville’s victory wouldn’t be possible, though, without the heroics of its defense. The Jaguars finished with a franchise-record 10 sacks, 203 total yards allowed and four takeaways (they forced only 13 turnovers last season).
The Jaguars D buckled down to work in the first half, sacking Texans quarterback Tom Savage six times and limiting Houston to just 52 total yards (23 rushing). Defensive end Calais Campbell wreaked havoc against the Texans, finishing with a career-high four sacks, the most by a Jaguars player in one game. Dante Fowler even joined in the scoring parade, returning a fumble for a 53-yard touchdown.
The Jaguars will look to build on that strong start when they square off with the Tennessee Titans this coming weekend. The Jaguars will fancy their chances of doing just that as they have fared extremely well against the Titans at home of late. The Jaguars have won each of their last three games against the Titans at EverBank Field.
The Jags will have to face their AFC South rivals, however, without wide receiver Allen Robinson who injured his left knee on his first reception of the season. Robinson’s a big loss for Jacksonville as he’s the Jaguars’ best downfield playmaker. With Robinson sidelined for the foreseeable future, that would mean more opportunities for Fournette. He will look to dissect a Tennessee defense that allowed 109 yards on the ground in their season-opening loss to the Raiders.
The Jaguars are 3-0 ATS in their last three home games against the Titans.
Writer’s Prediction
The Jaguars (PK) preserve their unbeaten record with a 21-17 win over the Titans.
