Carolina Gamecocks and the Missouri Tigers. After that, the Vols have gone 0-4, with their latest loss being a 24-13 defeat at the hands of the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville on Nov. 7. Tennessee was supposed to play the Texas A&M Aggies last Saturday, but that game had to be postponed due to COVID-19-related issues. The extended rest must be beneficial for Vols quarterback Jarrett Guarantano, who wasn’t able to finish the Arkansas game after sustaining an apparent head injury. If healthy, Guarantano should start for Tennessee against Auburn. If not, it will have to be either Harrison Bailey or Brian Maurer, though the Vols are at their best when Guarantano is under center driving their offense that is averaging 20.7 points per game.
Those looking to bet on Tennessee must be encouraged to do so over the fact that the Vols are 3-1 against the spread in their last four road games against Auburn, dating back to 1998. The last time Tennessee visited Auburn was in 2018, when the Vols scored a 30-24 win as 15.5-road dogs.
Betting on the Auburn Tigers (-10.5)
Record: 4-2 Overall / 4-2 Conference
Auburn is finally gaining steam. After alternating wins and losses in their first four games of the season, the Tigers have now won their last two games. They beat the Ole Miss Rebels on the road on Oct. 24, 35-28, then proceeded to defeat the LSU Tigers on Oct. 31, 48-11. Like Tennessee, Auburn was scheduled to play last Saturday against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, but that had to be canceled due to — you guessed it — COVID-19. In any case, Auburn must be excited to deal with Tennessee’s horrible defense, particularly against the pass. The Volunteers are allowing 247.5 passing yards per game and had just allowed Arkansas to drill them with three touchdown passes without an interception. That’s music to the ears of Auburn quarterback Bo Nix, who went 18-of-24 for 300 yards and three touchdowns without getting picked in the win over LSU. Nix also rushed for 81 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Tennessee’s secondary will be shaking once it lines up against Auburn receivers Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz, who has 511 and 422 receiving yards this season, respectively, and has combined for five touchdown receptions, so far this season.
Auburn is 8-2 against the spread in its last 10 home games.
Writer’s Prediction
Auburn wins, 38-26.
