Betting on the Texas Longhorns (-1.5)
Record: 18-7 Overall/7-5 Conference
Texas will look to recover from an 80-63 loss in Waco to the Baylor Bears last Saturday, which derailed the Longhorns in their mission to win three games in a row. Before losing to the defending national champion, the Longhorns took down the Iowa State Cyclones (63-41) and the Kansas Jayhawks (79-76), both at home. The win against the Jayhawks boosted the stock of the Longhorns. Notwithstanding its loss to Baylor, Texas is a team that can’t be overlooked, especially because of its defense. The Longhorns are second in the nation with just 56.8 points allowed per game and seventh in opponents’ turnovers rate (21.3%). That’s the same defense that crippled Oklahoma’s attack in the first meeting between these two teams, as the Sooners shot just 40.4 percent from the field and had 16 turnovers in a 66-52 home win by Texas.
Texas is 6-6 against the spread this season in Big 12 games.
Betting on the Oklahoma Sooners (+1.5)
Record: 14-11 Overall/4-8 Conference
Oklahoma has suffered yet another loss in Big 12 play, as the Sooners absorbed a 71-69 defeat at the hands of the Jayhawks last Saturday in Lawrence. That said, the score of that game showed that the Sooners made Kansas sweat. The Sooners even had the lead at the half, but just couldn’t finish the job. Nevertheless, Jordan Goldwire and Tanner Groves each had a good performance in that contest to build on heading into the rematch against Texas. Goldwire had 20 points in the Kansas game, while Groves scored 19. The two combined for just nine points in the initial matchup versus the Longhorns, so the hope for the Sooners is that Goldwire and Groves will finally be able to show up against the same opponent this time around. The Sooners rely heavily on their excellent offense inside the arc. In fact, they are fifth nationally with a 58.1 2-point shooting percentage.
Oklahoma is 3-2 against the spread in its last five games overall.
Writer’s Prediction
Oklahoma wins, 63-60.
