Betting on the Texas Rangers (45-46)
The Rangers will be coming off a frustrating loss to the Kansas City Royals, 4-3, as Shin-Soo Choo dropped an easy catch off a fly ball – with two already out – and allowed a walk-off RBI single. It was a big punch to Texas’ good run, who came in having won five of their last six.
Carlos Gomez, Adrian Beltre, and Mike Napoli are the team’s most efficient batters since the returning from the All-Star break, but no one has been truly standing out. Their leading hitter, Elvis Andrus, is just 1-for-13 in their last three games, while their scrappy second baseman, Rougned Odor, who’s batting a career-low .215 this season, has been blanked in his last 11 at-bats.
With that stagnancy on offense, projected starting pitcher Andrew Cashner (4-7, 3.54 ERA) will have a heavier task on defense. He will look to have a good follow-up to his quality start last July 5th against the Boston Red Sox, where he didn’t allow a run in the seven innings he tossed in (four hits and four strikeouts). The Orioles’ current roster is 15-for-48 against him all-time (.313), with just one walk and nine strikeouts.
Betting on the Baltimore Orioles (42-49)
The Orioles are also returning from a loss, and their stretch is far worse than the Rangers. Sunday’s 8-0 shutout defeat from the Chicago Cubs was their 11th in 15 games, and it was also the fifth time in that span where they only scored two runs or less.
It has been an ugly season for the Orioles, with their numbers from the last three games being quite indicative of the struggles. Despite having all the firepower of Manny Machado, Mark Trumbo, Chris Davis, Adam Jones, and Jonathan Schoop, among others, who are all well-respected batters, the Os, altogether, are just hitting .191 since the break (19-for-99), 23 of which ended up as strikeouts.
Machado and company will have to show up extra-focused for tomorrow if they want to break out of the slump, with their starting pitcher for Monday, Chris Tillman, not being the slightest threat to the opposition. The 29-year-old Tillman is 1-5 with a woeful 7.90 ERA in 11 starts on the year, while also surrendering 34 hits on 17 runs and eight walks in his last 18.2 innings (16 Ks). Additionally, the Rangers’ current roster is batting .330 against him in their careers – three homers, 13 RBIs, and 19 walks.
Writer’s Prediction
The Rangers (+101) take it, 6-4.
