MLB World Series News and Previews

10. Brandon Phillips and Yadier Molina exchanging “pleasantries” in the first inning
(St. Louis Cardinals vs. Cincinnati Reds – August 10, 2010)

Heading into the game, the Reds’ Brandon Phillips made it clear to reporters how much hate he has for the Cardinals, calling all of them “little b*tches” that “b*tch and moan about everything.”

As he then entered the plate during the first inning, the Cards’ catcher, Yadier Molina, made sure that the hatred is mutual. It also ignited the long history of dislike between managers Tony La Russa (Cardinals) and Dusty Baker (Reds).

9. Chan Ho Park’s drop kick on Tim Belcher
(Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Anaheim Angels – June 5, 1999)

From a simple sacrifice bunt, who knew that we’d see such a kick?

Park, though, claimed that the kick was a retaliation for Belcher’s trash talk, which is probably the best physical response from an Asian guy getting called racial slurs.

8. Ray Knight and the Mets vs. Eric Davis and “a karate expert”
(New York Mets vs. Cincinnati Reds – July 22, 1986)

Eric Davis comes in as a pinch runner and steals a base during the crucial extra inning. Ray Knight, a former Red, didn’t like it. They push, shove, curse and all, with their respective teammates also joining in.

The best part of it, however, is the commentators warning Kevin Mitchell and the Mets about a “karate expert.”

7. Pedro Martinez showing he has no mercy
(Boston Red Sox vs. New York Yankees – October 11, 2003)

It’s the playoffs and it’s Yankees versus the Red Sox. Animosity is flying through the air, as pitchers from both clubs are awful at hiding that they are intentionally plunking batters.

You have the wildcard, short-tempered Manny Ramirez, who’s always ready for a scuffle, Roger Clemens, who’s not the nicest guy in the world… not even in his sleep, and a whole bunch of characters. In short, the rivalry is finally renewed after all these years, and it. Is. Steaming.

What you”ll see above, particularly around the 1:09 mark, is the highlight of the whole melee. RIP Don Zimmer (1931-2014).

6. Rougned Odor vs. Jose Bautista: a battle of two unlikeable dudes
(Texas Rangers vs. Toronto Blue Jays – May 15, 2016)

It’s a routine slide to second base, unless it’s between Rougned Odor and Jose Bautista. They are two fiery guys who are never shy to bark at opponents’ faces.

Props to Odor for solidly connecting and props to Bautista for not falling down.

5.  Armando Benitez vs. THE WHOLE YANKEES TEAM
(Baltimore Orioles vs. New York Yankees – May 19, 1998)

This is all on the very frustrated Benitez, who, at that time, had given up four home runs in his last 18 or less innings. It was such a cheap shot that almost every Yankee went after him, with Daryl Strawberry being the most aggressive.

They fought on the field, the dugout, the field again, and then the dugout again.

4. John Roseboro vs. Juan Marichal (and his bat)
(San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers – August 22, 1965)

Marichal and Roseboro were having a heated argument about their respective teams’ game-long exchange of wild pitches, and as usual, it resulted in a classic bench-clearing brawl. Bats were used and the latter ended up bleeding, so much so that he ended up in the hospital.

The two eventually became friends, up until Roseboro’s death in August 16, 2002.

3. A good ‘ol Yankees-Red Sox rumble
(New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox – May 20, 1976)

Like the Odor-Bautista incident, this was a rare exception – this isn’t your everyday slide (despite this one being at home plate). This was at the height of the two franchises’ rivalry in the 70s, where they all definitely look like they are willing to kill each other.

Carlton Fisk and Lou Piniella wrestle, Bill Lee gets pounded by Mickey Rivers and Graig Nettles, and the lovefest is just overflowing.

2. Nolan Ryan is a gangster
(Texas Rangers vs. Chicago White Sox – August 4, 1993)

Nolan Ryan is a gangster. Period.

The man was 46 at that time; the ultimate twilight of his illustrious career, and he’s still out there headlocking well-built 20-somethings who were supposed to deck him easily. This looked like the original Bob Barker vs. Happy Gilmore fight.

1. The real Royal Rumble
(San Diego Padres vs. Atlanta Braves – August 12, 1984)

No description can do this brawl justice. This is the wildest fight in the history of the MLB. It felt like every single player from both teams pushed or took a swing at an opponent.

They fought and people in the stadium also fought – people at home watching the melee probably fought with each other as well.

PS: watch how quickly Craig Lefferts disappear from the scene.
