Betting on the Toronto Blue Jays (42-49)

Moneyline: EVEN

The Blue Jays are back to the bottom of the AL East after dropping two of three games against the Detroit Tigers in their first series back from the All-Star break. They’ve returned to seven games under .500, and any hope of a playoff spot is looking increasingly unlikely.

With Toronto so far off the pace, ace Marcus Stroman has emerged as a possible trade target for contenders. But he’s still a Blue Jay right now, and he’s set to continue his strong play of late as he gets the start against the Red Sox.

Stroman is coming off a one-run, seven-inning outing against the Houston Astros, the third time in his last six starts where he’s gone at least seven innings and given up one run or fewer. But despite a 5-2 record on the road, Stroman has pitched significantly better at home this season. He has a 2.70 ERA at home compared to a 4.14 ERA on the road.

Stroman has also had his difficulties against the Red Sox in recent meetings. He had his worst start of the season against them back in April as he gave up six earned runs on 11 hits over 4.2 innings. That’s the fourth straight start where Stroman has given up five or more earned runs against the Red Sox.

Betting on the Boston Red Sox (52-41)

Moneyline: -110

The struggling Boston Red Sox got a much-needed split of last night’s double-header—and four-game series—against the New York Yankees. The Sox are now just 3-6 in their last nine games dating back to the pre-All-Star break.

Thanks to David Price’s terrific eight scoreless innings, last night’s 3-0 win was the first time the Sox had shut a team out since May 27. Tonight’s starter, Eduardo Rodriguez, will be hard-pressed to match that performance considering that he’s just coming off the DL following a knee injury. Rodriguez, though, did look good in his rehab start for Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday. He allowed one run on six hits and no walks while striking out seven over 6.1 innings.

Rodriguez has yet to start against Toronto this season—his lone appearance was in relief—but he had a rough time facing the Blue Jays last season. In three starts, he went 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 10 total walks as the Red Sox went on to lose all three of those games.

Writer’s Prediction

The Red Sox (-110) continue their domination of Stroman as they get the big home win.
