Betting on Tottenham Hotspur (-400)
Tottenham are coming off a shock 2-1 defeat “at home” against Monaco in their Champions League opener. “At home” is in quotation marks since that game was played at Wembley while their home stadium continues to undergo renovations. They’ll have the perfect opportunity to bounce back, though, as they return home to White Hart Lane for the visit of Sunderland.Spurs have an excellent home record against the Black Cats, going undefeated (6-1-0) in their last seven home games against them. That includes a 4-1 win in last year’s fixture. Of course, they have an excellent record against Sunderland whatever the venue. Spurs are unbeaten in the last 12 league games against Sunderland, with their last loss coming way back in April 2010.
Spurs have been a bit sluggish to start the season despite still being undefeated (2-2-0). However, they finally showed signs of breaking out after thrashing Stoke 4-0 away from home.
They will also have Mousa Dembele back after serving out his six-match ban. The Belgian midfielder is arguably the most irreplaceable player on the Spurs team and provides the much-needed attacking thrust from midfield. Dembele scored in last year’s 4-1 win over Sunderland.
Midfielder Christian Eriksen had his best performance of the season with two assists in their win over Stoke, and will look to continue that fine form against Sunderland. Eriksen has scored four goals in his last three games against the Black Cats.
Betting on Sunderland (+825)
It hasn’t been a particularly promising start to the David Moyes era at Sunderland. The Black Cats are back down in the relegation zone – 19th to be specific – with three losses and a draw through four matches. They were on the receiving end of an 11-minute Romelu Lukaku hat-trick in a 3-0 loss to Everton last time out.
These early-season struggles are nothing new for the Black Cats. They haven’t won any of their last 23 Premier League matches in either August or September, with 14 losses and 9 draws.
Sunderland’s struggles against Spurs are well-documented, and they haven’t done well away from home in general. They won just three road games last season, and conceded a league-high 42 goals.
Their best chance to get anything out of this game will be for Jermain Defoe to be at the top of his game. The former Spurs striker has scored in six Premier League away appearances in a row.
Writer’s Prediction
Tottenham take out their Champions League frustrations on Sunderland as Spurs grab a comprehensive 3-0 win. Take the over 2.5 goals for a bit more value.
